Giger's work on ALIEN (and elsewhere) was some of the creepiest (in a good way) art and design work I've seen.

RIP

Thank you, Giger, for scaring the ever loving carp out of us :)

I liked that one album cover he did for ELP.

There won’t be anyone like him ever.

“Giger’s work on ALIEN (and elsewhere) was some of the creepiest (in a good way) art and design work I’ve seen. “

...and it holds up well too, because it made no attempt to mimic presently-existing technology. Change out the CRT displays in the ships with LCD’s, and the films could have been made last week.

A Dune that would have been worth seeing

He was certainly an original.

I agree. ALIEN has aged very well, for the most part. I think it holds up better than its sequel (ALIENS) in that respect. (Though I do enjoy ALIENS as well!)

He was one of the very few artists to grasp the concept of how different an alien being could be. Most follow an anthropomorphic model but when I saw his creations for “Alien” I was blown away. He was a true original and his death is a great loss.

He designed the finish on a limited edition electric guitar a few years ago, either an Ibanez or a Charvel. It was pretty cool looking.

He used lots of human genitalia in his work. You can see it in the ALIEN series, and some of his art work, while creepy, probably could not be shown on TV or FR.
But then, so did Georgia O’Keeffe and many other artists.

Did he also do the one in Spaceballs?

I did some searching, and it looks like it was an Ibanez. Very cool looking guitar!

Here is an interview that is on the re-release of the album. At about 5 minutes in they talk about Giger. “He’s our kind of guy. If he played an instrument he could be in the band.”

They talk about his house, his artwork, etc.

He was amazing. Very disturbing and challenging style. Really primal. Alien was the first scary movie I ever watched in a theatre. I was terrified by his beast, but grew to love it’s elegant design and life cycle. I can’t imagine what his nightmares must have looked like.

I wish him a peaceful afterlife with our Lord.
