Longtime Michigan Congressman John Conyers joined a federal lawsuit Thursday taking aim at the requirement that petition collectors be registered voters, as part of a larger challenge to an order removing his name from the primary ballot in August.
Conyers, who was first elected to the House in 1964 and represents a district including Detroit and several suburbs, joined the suit two days after Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett determined he didn’t have enough signatures to appear on the Aug. 5 Democratic primary ballot. She found Conyers was more than 400 signatures short of 1,000 needed.
The suit was filed against Garrett and Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson by the American Civil Liberties Union’s Michigan chapter on behalf of two petition circulators and others. The signatures they gathered weren’t counted because they hadn’t complied with state voter registration requirements.
The ACLU also asked the court to order Garrett and Johnson to stop enforcing the law, which the group deems unconstitutional. A hearing is planned for Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Detroit. … …

so all the 25 other times they had to be, he didn’t have a problem with it. now that he suffers from the law, now he wants to challenge it. hypocrite.

Nothing matters but getting the RIGHT Democrats elected.
This guy is an important slave vote overseer on the Democrat Plantation, so I expect laws will not apply.

Here’s the problem. Because of his incompetent employees, there’s only one candidate in the Democratic primary....some no-name minister from the local area. For Conyers to go into the election....he has to be a write-in or convince the judge this is all so unfair.
So here’s the problem. Write-in? He’d have to convince a majority of voters in this district who typically hit one button (vote-all-Democrat) to avoid the button, and go line-by-line. I’ve read comments from the District to indicate that better than half the voters hit the vote-all-Democratic button. Then he has to convince them to write his name in. The odds? Man, I don’t think Vegas would even touch this now for statistical odds.
The minister running? If he simply gets church-goers to side up with him....I think he’s got twenty-percent of the standard voting group concreted to his side. Toss in those who will push the vote-for-all-Democrats button, and I think he’ll win this election.
This all brings me to this one belief....that maybe the minister knew the two guys who were doing the petition stuff for Conyers, and that there was a conspiracy of sorts....to ensure Conyers screwed up. This is Detroit, and stranger things have occurred.
judge can say nothing prevents him being on the ballot as a write-in, he’s incumbent and won the last fifty years so people there know him, no case and the law stands to ensure signature reliability.

Here’s my scenario.
Conyers ends up doing a campaign based on the write-in vote. Some guy convinces another guy in Detroit to run, who has a similar sounding name (Conners, Conley, Canners, etc). The day before the election....walk around and hand out sheets with big bold lettering “vote for Conners”. Idiots off the street will hold onto that and vote for the other guy.
Election ends, with the minister getting enough votes to win, then some mystery guy named Conners in second place, then some Republican, and finally Conyers getting ten percent.
I think it is selfish of this man. He has been in office since the 60’s and he is 85 years old hasn’t he had enough time to eff up the American people. He should retire and enjoy the few years he has left on earth he can spend the rest of his years laughing all the way to the bank.
The same state that f—ked McCotter will let this “read da bill” a-hole slime his way back onto the ballot.
I wonder how many of the 600 signatures he got were legitimate.
He’s worried about two things:
1) His constituents are room temperature IQ and generally only vote straight Democratic ticket (one punch), and
2) His constituents can’t spell.

Seems the ACLU (All Crazies and Lunatics United) seems to have a basic comprehension problem, as they do in virtually every other issue they stick their noses in.

The PRIMARY is in August. Does Michigan have a sore loser law? (Can he run as a write-in in the primary, and if he loses, run again as a write-in in the general?)
Even in a 4-way race among Conyers, Horace Sheffield (the only one in the Democrat primary), your Conners guy, and Jeff Gorman (the only one in the Republican primary), I would not be optimistic about a Republican winning the seat.
Electors there means “voters.” What is at issue is that the circulators of the petitions were not properly registered.
Conyers and ACLU will claim free speech rights are being violated. On the other hand, requiring petition circulators to be registered voters, at least theoretically, helps to insure the validity of the signatures.
Strangely enough, there’s a Christina Conyers (R) running in the neighboring 14th District.....incumbent Gary Peters (D) is running for Senate, likely (D) nominee is former Representative Hansen Clarke.
How about a Conyer Johns? If we could one such guy in the district and run him...that’d really confuse the locals.
Even when state laws clearl state the a write in vote must be spelled correctly, liberal judges ignore it.
