Is country music dead?
Fox News ^ | 05/16/2014 | Collin Raye

As a platinum-selling country music artist and, more importantly, a lifelong fan of the genre, I’d like to send out this heartfelt plea to the gatekeepers of the industry:

Enough already.

I’d like to think that I am expressing what nearly every artist, musician and songwriter (with perhaps a few exceptions) is thinking when I contend that the Bro’ Country phenomenon must cease.

It has had its run for better or worse and it’s time for Nashville to get back to producing, and more importantly promoting, good singers singing real songs. It’s time for country music to find its identity again before it is lost forever.

~snip~

But as someone who grew up loving and being forever affected by the true greats of country music, I simply have to offer up this plea to the Nashville country music industry to reclaim the identity and poetic greatness that once was our format. The well-written poetic word of the country song has disappeared.

~snip~

Willie Nelson once wrote in his early song, "Shotgun Willie," that “you can’t make a record if you ain’t got nothing to say.” Apparently, that’s not the case anymore.

Disposable, forgettable music has been the order of the day for quite a while now and it’s time for that to stop.

Nowadays it’s just pop rock with a twang.

It’s bubblegum pop in blue genes with an accent.

My wife's the country music fan in the house, I'm still a rock 'n roll guy (Zeppelin, Rush, etc.. music from that era.)

I keep calling the crap she listens to "Pop Country." I personally cannot stand it. Older country music like the author of this article refers to I can "tolerate" ... actually, if it's live REAL country I kinda like it. But this new crap is just that --- crap.

IMO, Blake Shelton is absolutely positively the WORST country music has to offer.

Just like movies made in Hollywood. It all follows 4 different templates...if it isn’t in the template, it doesn’t get promoted.

“The perfect country song” :)

You Never Even Called Me By My Name

Written By Steve Goodman
As Recorded By David Allan Coe

WELL, IT WAS ALL
THAT I COULD DO TO KEEP FROM CRYING’
SOMETIMES IT SEEMED SO USELESS TO REMAIN
BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO CALL ME DARLIN’, DARLIN’
YOU NEVER EVEN CALL ME BY MY NAME

YOU DON’T HAVE TO CALL ME WAYLON JENNINGS
AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO CALL ME CHARLIE PRIDE
AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO CALL ME MERLE HAGGARD/ANYMORE
EVEN THOUGH YOU’RE ON MY FIGHTING’ SIDE

CHORUS:
AND I’LL HANG AROUND AS LONG AS YOU WILL LET ME
AND I NEVER MINDED STANDING’ IN THE RAIN
BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO CALL ME DARLIN’, DARLIN’
YOU NEVER EVEN CALLED ME BY MY NAME

WELL, I’VE HEARD MY NAME
A FEW TIMES IN YOUR PHONE BOOK (Hello, Hello)
AND I’VE SEEN IT ON SIGNS WHERE I’VE PLAYED
BUT THE ONLY TIME I KNOW
I’LL HEAR “DAVID ALLAN COE”
IS WHEN JESUS HAS HIS FINAL JUDGMENT DAY

REPEAT CHORUS

RECITATION:
WELL, A FRIEND OF MINE NAMED STEVE GOODMAN WROTE THAT SONG
AND HE TOLD ME IT WAS THE PERFECT COUNTRY & WESTERN SONG
I WROTE HIM BACK A LETTER AND I TOLD HIM IT WAS NOT THE PERFECT COUNTRY & WESTERN SONG BECAUSE HE HADN’T SAID ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT MAMA,
OR TRAINS,
OR TRUCKS,
OR PRISON,
OR GETTING’ DRUNK
WELL HE SAT DOWN AND WROTE ANOTHER VERSE TO THE SONG
AND HE SENT IT TO ME,
AND AFTER READING IT,
I REALIZED THAT MY FRIEND HAD WRITTEN THE PERFECT
COUNTRY & WESTERN SONG
AND I FELT OBLIGED TO INCLUDE IT ON THIS ALBUM
THE LAST VERSE GOES LIKE THIS HERE:

WELL, I WAS DRUNK THE DAY MY MOM GOT OUT OF PRISON
AND I WENT TO PICK HER UP IN THE RAIN
BUT BEFORE I COULD GET TO THE STATION IN MY PICKUP TRUCK
SHE GOT RUN NED OVER BY A DAMNED OLD TRAIN

CHORUS:
AND I’LL HANG AROUND AS LONG AS YOU WILL LET ME
AND I NEVER MINDED STANDING’ IN THE RAIN
NO, A’ YOU DON’T HAVE TO CALL ME DARLIN’, DARLIN’
YOU NEVER EVEN CALL ME
WELL I WONDER WHY YOU DON’T CALL ME
WHY DON’T YOU EVER CALL ME BY MY NAME

Today’s country music really makes me appreciate my set of CDs from Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.

Good stuff.

I took a ride with a guy who has satellite radio. The Outlaw Country channel has some pretty good stuff.

What killed it for me is Taylor Swift. She’s like nails on a chalkboard far as I’m concerned.

The Taylor Smith joke is that one day she's going to write a song where it's HER fault, she admits she screwed up, and apologizes.

Another bitchy song - Miranda Lambert - "White Liar" where she reams a guy up and down for being a dirty liar, then her "revenge" is she's been lying, too. OK, slut, you're the same slimeball you've been complaining your man is, who can be proud of that? Man, what what a sleazy song.

My opinion is Rascal Flatts destroyed the music. Every new song, every new song is some version that sounds just like them, and I did not like them.

That’s because “country” is the only place to go that will accept 70’s style music. Pop music has gone totally down the flusher.

Classic country lyrics would have a tough time navigating our current uber-PC culture IMO.

Am I the only one who can watch a show like the Country Music Awards and wonder what the HELL I'm looking at?

Country music has been disintegrating for a generation. We now have imitations of the imitators who were imitating the early imitators.
Last time I listened to a radio station which plays today's country I heard a song with sounded like hip hop.

As bad as FM Radio in the Shitcago market has become, I refuse to pay to listen to radio, period. I spend less than 20 minutes in my gas guzzling SUV a day -- wind noise is preferable to anything on the radio these days.
