On February 27 of this year, President Obama launched the My Brothers Keeper Initiative (MBK). MBK stands for the core principle that if you work hard and play by the rules, you should have the opportunity to succeed, and that your ability to get ahead should be determined by your hard work, ambition, and goals not by the circumstances of your birth.
Yet boys and young men of color consistently face some of the most severe challenges to success. We need make sure were giving all Americans the chance and opportunity to get a quality education, grow up in a safe neighborhood, and receive positive reinforcement from their community to succeed. Making sure that all our youth have opportunities to reach their full potential is what MBK is all about.
The President has declared 2014 a year of action and MBK is an example of how he is using his convening power and the information and expertise that reside within the federal government to help communities in need. As Chair of the MBK Federal Interagency Task Force (Task Force), Ive been working with federal agencies across the government as part of a 90-day process to take inventory of what the federal government is doing and to identify what works.
Throughout this process, the Task Force has been listening to and engaging communities and advocates to learn from them. Theres much to learn from work already being done across the country in the public and private sector. Weve been listening in-person and through webinars to hear from leading experts, policymakers, law enforcement, and others on what should be fixed and whats already working. Concurrently, there is a private sector effort underway as well.

Life is tough, tough love is required.
Obama, Jesse, Al, and Eric Holder have set back blacks for many years. Some will never recover.
Boys need fathers in the home! PERIOD!
The first thing I thought of is 0 trolling for young black men. yeccch.
Now, if MOW (Mothers on Welfare) will play ball. The greatest disincentive to family values has been the "Great Society".
If the many TRILLIONS of dollars we’ve spent since 1965 hasn’t helped them, what makes anyone think that a few million now, administered through people who’ve never run anything, is going to work?
It’s nothing but graft payouts.
No it isn’t.
All this program does is make liberal leaders even richer and liberal white rank and file feel good about themselves.
This program does nothing else.
Jebby Bush needs to see that ^^.
Make sure you import thousands of low-wage foreigners so that Blacks will have jobs, too.
He’s too stupid to understand it.
Helping young men of color, extorting 40 thousand dollar a year no show jobs from corporations
Hey, it's not like he was elected to help all Americans, and bring the races together.
We have a black president.
We have a black Supreme Court justice.
There are numerous blacks in lower level federal courts, in Congress, state legislatures, mayors of major cities, business executives of major corporations, attorneys in major law firms. You name it, and every field of endeavor is open to those of all races, and have been for decades.
Many books have been written on this subject. Suffice it to say, that blacks are not being discriminated against any longer, in pursuing whatever field they are interested in.
So whatever this presidential effort comes up with, I hope it doesn’t devolve into bull sessions of bashing whites and calling us a flawed racist society.
“Helping young men of color, extorting 40 thousand dollar a year no show jobs from corporations”
Actually when I first heard about “My Brother’s Keeper” program, I thought it was a recruitment drive for black prison guards.
Whites need equal representation in the NBA.
