WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republican leaders intervened Friday to prevent a vote on U.S. immigration legislation, dealing a severe blow to election-year efforts to overhaul the widely denigrated system.

The move came after a Republican congressman announced plans to try to force a vote next week, over strong conservative opposition, on his measure creating a path to citizenship for immigrants who live here illegally yet serve in the military.

Rep. Jeff Denham labeled his bill the ENLIST Act and said he would seek a vote as an amendment to the popular annual defense bill, the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA.

In response, Doug Heye, spokesman for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, said: "No proposed ENLIST amendments to NDAA will be made in order."

Heye said no stand-alone vote on the measure would be permitted, either.

Friday's developments seemed to all but rule out anything happening on the issue this year in the House, if even Denham's limited measure could not advance.

The usual sickening bias from Asspress, especially in picking photos, both favoring amnesty.

Democrips want murderers and rapists on the streets. These are the ‘dreamers’. They dream of raping and killing your children while Obama and co smile approvingly.

If you protest, you’re a racist.

That is why anti-amnesty candidates should maintain third-party ballot position against those Rino Republican Representatives who are likely to turn traitor after the primaries. If a third-party anti-amnesty candidate is on the ballot a credible threat can be made that his candidacy will siphon off enough votes from the Republican to permit the Democrat to win. This threat will be made clear to the Republican base so long as the Republican candidate fails to make ironclad, written in blood, promises to vote against amnesty-for what they might be worth.

I think Bob Goodlatte’s primary challenger dropped out and ran third party.

Are illegal immigrants currently serving in the miitary? Is it primarily young people who were brought here as children by their illegal parents and then enlist? How does this work?

unfortunately in ca, the republocrat party here has already figured out a way around that scanario. they’ve outlawed all but the top two after primaries.

in safe-seat, jerry-rigged GOP districts here, that means that it will usually be rep vs rep or dem vs dem.

look for the dems and reps to set this up crock of a system in other states as well.

Sneaking in a bill as an amendment to NDAA. Slimy.

As the step father to two LEGAL immigrants (Russians) who enlisted in the U.S. Army, I do not understand how we have illegals in the military. My stepsons both had to produce documents which were verified through both immigration and Social Security depts before they were permitted to enlist. They are both now U.S. citizens. How does an illegal game the system and get enlisted?

As the old saw goes, politicians only see the light when they feel the heat.

So, if the leadership will not allow it to be attached to this bill and won’t permit a vote on a stand alone bill they obviously plan to attach it to a must pass bill. I don’t for a second believe immigration reform is dead.

Would somebody please explain this to me. I spent several decades on active duty in the Army; I always understood that an illegal alien could not enlist because they (among other things) did not have a social security number. Green card holders could enlist, but not illegals, that would be a fraudulent enlistment. At least that has been the case over the last thirty years.

Balderdash. If it happens, and I believe it will, it will happen in the lame duck session after the election. The uniparty is decided on the issue: the middle class MUST be screwed over.

“unfortunately in ca, the republocrat party here has already figured out a way around that scanario. they’ve outlawed all but the top two after primaries.”

That’s already the norm in most states. The uniparty is strongly in favor of free and fair elections. So long as their two collaborating factions are the only ones on the ballot.

the widely denigrated system

Why don't we overhaul the widely denigrated tax system?

Why don't we overhaul the widely denigrated bank robbery laws?

Why don't we overhaul the widely denigrated rape, murder, and child molestation laws?

WHY don't we FOLLOW and UPHOLD the law?
