Illegal immigrants repeatedly risk death to enter U.S.

OGALES, MEXICO (CNN) — Their journey through the desert ended in the back of a U.S. Border Patrol van.

Sitting inside the chapel of the San Juan Bosco shelter for deportees in Nogales, Mexico, Rey and Herlinda rest and wait for another chance to cross illegally into the United States with their children ages 4, 9 and 11 in tow. Temperatures in this stretch of desert that straddles the U.S.-Mexico border hover around 100 degrees.

"I know that I'm putting all three of them at risk, but what else can I do?" said Rey, who says he has lived and worked in the United States without authorization on and off for the past 27 years. Until recently, he kept his family in Mexico, but he says he can no longer afford to sustain two households.

"What's the motivation? When one of my kids asks for meat or (candy), I cannot just say no," Rey added. "Mexico never changes. There was poverty when I left in 1986 and nothing has changed."

Hundreds of thousands of immigrants like Rey and Herlinda have tried to cross illegally into the United States over the past two years, even as the government steps up investments in manpower and technology to secure the nation's borders.

More than 150 end up dead every year. Thousands more get deported every month, according to U.S. Customs and Border and Protection figures. But would-be immigrants keep coming.

"People are still driven by economic necessity to come to the United States by whatever means they can. Some come to join family members already here, others because they are hungry," said Isabel Garcia, a public defender and a co-chair of the Tucson, Arizona-based Coalition for Human Rights.

I would ask the following: As stated crossing over the border can be dangerous and there can be consequences. So this family has children 4,9,and 11..Seeing as how it's dangerous to cross the border and the parents knowingly commits acts of child endangerment that also would be considered child abuse. Why are the parents never held to any standard of law pertaining to child abuse. Both sides of the border indicate how dangerous it is to cross over.My question is,why are the parents not criminally charged for child abuse ? Let one of us have in tow our children 4,9,and 11 attempt to enter Mexico illegally by putting our children in an dangerous environment and see how quick we will be arrested & criminally charged for child abuse. Both gov's do not hold the parents responsible for child abuse. We all seen and read how childrens lives are entrusted to dangerous drug cartel smugglers. The parents hire these smugglers by paying them money to commit crimes by smuggling their children into America. If caught DHS takes the children to their parents in country illegally and assures them there will be no pending criminal charges for what they did to their children. Why is child abused condone in this way by both gov's ?..

Rey started coming to the US 28 years ago. What if...just WHAT IF...he had started the process to legally emigrate to the US then? He would have gotten a green card, become naturalized, and raised his young family here...all LEGALLY without the danger of desert crossings and drug smugglers. What is SO HARD about planning your life out and following the damn law? WHY would you put your family at risk just because you can't map out a simple plan for your own life? What a crock of BS sob story propaganda this is.

I actually sympathize with this family, but what’s the solution? That’s the part that’s missing. Do we simply open America’s borders and let the world’s needy come on in? I’m sure there are plenty of Africans, Indians, and Chinese who would love to come here.

The story also doesn’t explore why Mexico is such a crap hole. I daresay it’s due to a lack of law and order. Try to build something nice, and someone has their hand out for a bribe or worse, someone comes in and destroys or takes it. So the mentality that says it’s OK to come here and ignore our laws is at least related to Mexico’s own poverty. Not only that, but if we allow that mentality to be imported, we’ll have the same results here as in Mexico.

Sadly, I think we’re already in bad shape in that regard. Too many people don’t really respect the law in this country anymore. Why should they, when our politicians violate the spirit of our founding document on a daily basis? American law today is what the powerful say it is, much like Mexico I think.

Child abuse.

Pure and simple.

They should be imprisoned and the children returned to Mexico to stay with relatives.

Invaders historically have faced death when they have invaded other countries or have illegally crossed borders.

Not to worry though, as soon as our corrupt politicians have used the massive influx of illegal aliens to facilitate “fundamental change” in America, our government will have a very strong armed presence at the border to keep people from crossing without government permission.

The big difference will be that the border guards will be there to keep Americans from leaving the United States as opposed to keeping illegals border crossers from entry in much the same way East Germany and the USSR kept their populations and North Korea and Cuba still keeps their people imprisoned within their “peoples utopia”
