Student knocks Nimitz High teacher to floor; police investigation underway

HOUSTON - Aldine ISD police say a 16-year-old student at Nimitz High School was so upset with his substitute teacher for taking his phone, he pushed her onto the ground.

The video shows the student, who's described as 6 foot 3 and 325 lbs., standing up and pushing the teacher three times and on the third time the 66-year-old woman fell to the ground.

"We have a school policy that we can't use phones, we can't use phones during the day, so she was right to take his phone. For him to act that way, it isn't worth it," said student Daija Owen.

Police say the teenager was using his phone in class and got physical with the substitute teacher to get it back.

"The substitute teacher confiscated a cell phone from a 16-year-old male student. The student attempted to retrieve his cell phone. He got up and shoved the substitute teacher, shoved her repeatedly and eventually shoved her to the ground," Aldine ISD spokesperson Jason Spencer said.

The student actually walked himself to the principal's office to turn himself in. He was charged with injury to the elderly. His name isn't being released because he is a minor.

The substitute teacher, who is retired full-time teacher, was rushed to the hospital with minor injuries and released a short time later.

There is no word on whether the student will return to class.

The news media took a statement from one of the girls in the class: “Everybody was laughing but I didn’t think it was funny. You can’t just shove her like that.” Oh yeah? Then what can you do?

That’s a valid defense here in Texas. “He needed killin’.”

The mob has “policies” too. Taking something from someone is still stealing. He may have been following his own “policy” that he wasn’t going to put up with it.

The student is another dead eyed zombie. He has no idea why he did it. He’s operating on the level of an amoeba

student— large black male
teacher-— rotund 66 year white old woman. Her fat insulated her from getting hurt IMO

Is it possible to have some sort of kill switch for student cell phones in classrooms? When I worked at a high school recently, a veteran(years teaching) teacher’s arm was grabbed violently by a student retrieving his phone.

The comments made me laugh.

"Before we all jump to conclusions, is there any possibility that this white teacher may have used the "N-word" when addressing this young African-american? In so very many cases this is precisely what precipitates the young man defending himself. And that is very well what may have happened here. I would suggest some type of investigation into the teacher to see if she has displayed any type of bigotry over the years. Only after we've looked closely at her background, can we begin to question the student's actions."

and
"Hell, he could have killed the teacher if he wanted to, but didn't. His restrain was noteworthy."

Cellphone jammers do exist, but legality is probably an issue. Especially so now that the government is using cellphones as part of the Emergency Alert System.

Yes. You can definitely block cell phone signals in schools. And they should do this.
