Co-owners of California Chrome bash Churchill Downs' hospitality
WHAS 11 ^ | 5/17/14 | Alex Schuman

Steve Coburn’s insult to Churchill Downs’ hospitality is the latest in a series of complaints from different jockeys and owners.

In the New York Times, Coburn’s wife explains how California Chrome’s co-owner Perry Martin’s 83-year-old mother didn’t receive good treatment from the facilities.

“The hospitality we received at Churchill Downs wasn't very good," Coburn said. "It was a bad day for my partner and his family."

The Martins drove her down from Michigan for the Derby and according to them; the Churchill staff didn’t help them get the elderly woman, who uses a wheelchair, to her seat or down to the Winner’s Circle.

The experience was so bad that the Martins chose not to attend the Preakness and decided to watch the race with their kids at an undisclosed location.

Some were happy that he spoke out while others defended the state of Kentucky via social media.

I just read a story on drudge that says California Chrome may not race in Belmont Stakes if they don't let the horse use nasal strips.

“We have an excellent and veteran team of volunteers from throughout our community that serve as official Kentucky Derby hosts...”

There’s the problem. One of the most famous racetracks in the world won’t pony up *cough* to hire actual employees.

The California Chrome owners are outsiders and the racing establishment are paying them back for not following the establishment’s rules.

Kid Kruz was the horse with homosexual ownership, not California Chrome.

“The California Chrome owners are outsiders and the racing establishment are paying them back for not following the establishment’s rules.”

Similar to the way the GOP treats conservatives.

"Victim. Victim. Victim. Victim. Attention Whore."

Bullshit! Churchill Downs is ran and managed by inept elitist snobs that suck so bad, they've GOTTA be libtards.

Ron Turcotte (The jockey who rode Secretariat to the Triple Crown) hasn't even been able to attend the last 2 years because Churchill Downs didn't feel he was deserving of a handicap parking pass, even though he is now paralyzed and stuck in a wheelchair.

FU Churchill Downs!

Or is Ron Turcotte an attention whore and victim too?

Kentucky has an identity problem....even more than mighty Missouri..I just traversed the state north to south late last nite...

Western KY is very southern.....almost like west TN or northwest MS

very dark and flat and agriculture and drawls

Middle KY is part middle TN.....part southern Indiana

Eastern KY is serious mountain culture....former Unionist

Aside from western part it doesn’t feel super Southern to me but then again neither does Nashville anymore

But if you tell them they ain’t southern....thats fighting words

I know southern Indiana folks talk cuntry and disclaim anything north of Seymour

Its complicated....Dixie has grown yet shrunk

Anyhow....Kentucky is OK with me....

Just don’t get nosey in the eastern third

"snobs/horseracin' "
I live in KY; (as you know) it's not pony racing, it's nothing
more than "the spring partying/Derby Fe$tival" now.
the ponies, an afterthought.

It’s his Mother, he didn’t have the bucks to hire a companion for the day! It’s not Churchill’s duty to dote on a horse owners Mother! These guys are the whiniest horse people I’ve ever heard of!

Uh oh!

Right. Democratic elections at FR; “the poor and downtrodden pipples” get to elect 1 Moderator.

Possibly, also, “the pipples” get to vote OFF from SURVIVOR FREE REPUBLIC, 1 member of the forum for at least 1 week.

Respectfully, I think the point of the post was that the mistreatment occurred prior to the Derby, therefore, the California Chrome had not yet beaten the field, and caused scorn upon the owners. Thanks !

It’s not Churchill’s duty to dote on a horse owners Mother! These guys are the whiniest horse people I’ve ever heard of!

The cost to just enter Chrome into the Derby is $25,000. If the horse makes it into the starting gate that's another $25,000...........

For a $50,000 ticket, the family and all its neighborhood friends should have been given valet parking, front row seats, unlimited drinks, hors doerves, lobster dinner . And especially premier treatment for the wheelchair mother............

You're completely clueless.........

We disclaim it down here because there really isn’t anything north of Seymour, just politicians and flatlanders....not enough sinkholes, either.

We stopped last nite at the Culvers in Columbus off 65 and my son immediately said you can tell you’re more southern than say northern Michigan where we had left from 6 hours earlier

just folksier
