Michael Sam may have violated NCAA rules [Vanity]
self | 19 May 2014 | Bjørn Radtke

There was a discussion on FR about Michael Sam selling T-Shirts on his website. It got me thinking when was this website created? If it was created after he came out then he is an entrepreneirial capitalist but if it was created before then he's all about himself and his gayness.

So I went to check on my local domain register and low and behold it was created October 13, 2013 but this where Sam might be in a little bit of trouble withe NCAA. The site was registered by his now agents Empire Athletes of Santa Monica, California and specifically Cameron Weiss who is listed as a contact on the front page of Sam's website.

This begs so many questions but mainly did any money exchange hands at this time? Had Sam actually signed with these guys? If he did this would be a clear violation of NCAA rules and thus should have become immediately ineligible and Mizzou should have to forfeit all the games Sam played in and return all the bowl money they received.

Secondary, how does this small agency in California find out about a relatively unknown (up to that point) player in the Midwest?

Am I a conspiracy nut or is this a possibility FRiends?

Once he declared for the draft, the NCAA is out of the picture.

Michael Sam told his Missouri teammates he was gay before the start of the 2013 season, in August, I think.

I'm not sure I understand why that would matter in relation to his website and tee shirts, though.

However, I am certain Michael Sam would not have been named Co-Defensive Player of the Year in the SEC by the Associated Press if he had been heterosexual.

Sam has only two NFL caliber skills.

He has an explosive first step off the line of scrimmage, and he drives relentlessly, with 100% effort, until the whistle blows.

But he has some terrible deficiencies.

He's too slow to play linebacker in the NFL.

He's too light and lacks the upper body strength to play Defensive End, which is what he was drafted for.

His basic tackling skills are below average.

And his basic hand skills are below average when he tries to get around an Offensive Tackle or tries to shed a blocker to tackle a runner.

If he's on the field for First Down, every team is going to run right at him.

On pass plays, if he fails to get around the OT with his first step, the OT will lock him down for 4 seconds on every play.

The problem is you can’t hire an agent while still playing. Why would they blow money on a domain name if they hadn’t had contact or assurances from Sam 4 months before he came out.

IIRC , half his sacks came from some bottom feeder SEC team and a FCS (I-AA) teams. Most NFL DEs are a lot taller to match up with Ts or TEs. The only moderately successful DE his size is Baltimore’s Elvis Dumervil and he is alot heavier. Not so sure his first step will help him against even RTs let alone LTs in the NFL.

I wouldn’t call a domain registration exactly ‘blowing money’.

But a player can talk to an agent as long as he makes no commitments, receives no benefits, or signs anything. Rules allow that. If an agent does something on his own as long as the player is in no way involved the NCAA can’t say much about it.

I don’t see anything illegal here, but clearly....yes clearly this was a plan concocted months ago.

I think Sam was fairly certain...(he had to be) that he might not fair well in the upcoming draft, or that he would fair better if he came out as a Gay. He was also probably counseled that he might have a leg up on endorsements etc.

In short, these people are very shrewd. He might have a real cult following in the Gay community because who he is.

However, bottom line. I’m of the opinion of many here that he will be a flash in the pan. At least he stands a chance playing defense, because he does the hitting. At offense he wouldn’t stand a chance. is (hitter vs hittee)

From here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/26/sports/football/rookie-sports-agents-and-michael-sam-learn-the-ropes-together.html?_r=0

.....The entrepreneurial gene runs in their families. Weiss’s family is in commercial real estate, and Barkett’s parents operate a financial services company and are Democratic Party heavyweights. His mother, Lisa, is on the U.S.C. board of trustees...

Read the entire enlightening article for more information on how these two formerly “unknown” agents who have been in business for a year, suddenly hit the bigtime. Clearly it was all due to their hard work and amazing business savvy...LOL! This entire thing was a set-up (on both sides) from the get-go.

Who’s Michael Sam? (sarc)
Never heard of him and don’t care to read or hear about him. To me he doesn’t exist.

Amazing. What a country! All you have to do is announce to the world that you use your reproductive apparatus in a non-standard way, and you become rich and famous, and have your own TV show.

If he signed with an agent and received money then yes it’s a violation. But nobody is going to investigate this. There are tons of nefarious extra benefits that change hands all the time that the NCAA doesn’t look into. They sure as hell aren’t going to look into this.

And if Mizzou didn’t know they wouldn’t have to forfeit anything as the student/athlete did it on their own. You would have to have institutional knowledge for them to forfeit.

he never declared- he’s a senior and his eligibility ran out...

i’m in the FB business and can tell you this: 1) the michael sam gay issue was known to scouts and NFL teams 8 mos before it was made public- it was largely spoken about at the Senior Bowl 2) the word is sam has a serious personality disorder- one if not properly taken care of with medication has been deadly and destructive to others (this was the talk at the combine)...

sam did not sign with an agent until after his college eligibility was done....he’s on his second agent....much of this marketing in the brainchild of his agent, not sam...the first agent went to sam with a big marketing plan based on him being gay...
