The choppers swoop in, dumping insecticide over a plague-stricken village in Madagascar's stunning central highlands.
"The goal is to break the invasion," explains Tsitohaina Andriamaroahina, head of a U.N. mission to end a locust plague threatening the crops of 13 million farmers on this island nation.

The team moves quickly -- they can only spray at dawn, when the locusts are immobile on the ground, their wings weighed down by the morning dew. The pesticide only affects insects, according to the mission, neutralising their nervous system. Villagers then collect the grasshoppers and feed them to their pigs.

We used to have locusts too, in this country. Then we plowed up the places where they sheltered underground, and planted crops. That eliminated the locusts.

It’s a nerve agent. I’ve put a puny bit on my tongue once (I do things like that, carefully). It numbed the spot.
The idea that it won’t poison the hogs is a bit much for me.

FWIW, aerial spraying to combat disease-spreading insects has been done in SE MA among other places for years.

I guess there are no crops tha require insects for pollinization on the island.
