Surprise: VA Official Who 'Resigned' Over Death Scandal Was Already Set to Retire

Last week Department of Veteran's Affairs Undersecretary for Healthcare Robert Petzel resigned as the fallout over multiple scandals within the bureaucracy continue. Petzel served directly under VA Secretary Eric Shinseki, who has been asked to resign by multiple veterans groups including the American Legion and Concerned Veterans for America.

The problem with Petzel's "resignation?" He was already scheduled for retirement and simply left early. Meanwhile, Shinseki is still refusing to resign.

Why surprised? Can you imagine what might happen to moral across the government bureaucracy if we actually began punishing employees for malfeasance?

An "old Indian trick" among my Native ancestors was to turn over a couple of old men from the tribe when the local whites came demanding custody of whoever was responsible for some recent cattle rustling or other crime we may or may not have committed.

Contrary to popular belief and with certain notable exceptions, such as the Comanche and some brands of Sioux and Apache, Indians did not like fighting and would go to great lengths to avoid it, including the above and moving great distances.
