More than half (57%) said that people can be possessed by spirits, and 44% said magic, sorcery or witchcraft can influence people’s lives.
Even more Hispanic Protestants (37%) – including 59% of Pentecostals – said they have seen “the devil or evil spirits being driven out of a person.”
Roughly four-in-ten U.S. Hispanics (39%), including a similar share of Hispanic Catholics, said they believe in the “evil eye,” or that certain people can cast curses or spells that cause bad things to happen. A smaller share (15%) said they have had witchcraft or black magic practiced on them or someone close to them.

I read an interesting book years ago, THE EVIL EYE. it was a history of the belief and it told how the first look from a person with the evil eye was the worst, so very colorful amulets, some even pornographic, were designed to attract the eye, so the first evil glance would be absorbed by the amulet, then the second look would wold be less harmful.
It was believed that coats of arms on shields were really designed to absorb the evil eyes.

This should be no surprise to anyone who has lived in the Southwestern US, say, among people of Hispanic heritage. Syncretic beliefs among Hispanic Christians abound. One would have to live in a bell jar not to be aware of it.

At a former job, I heard about an incident that happened one day/night...
One of the hispanic ladies cleaning the kitchen area one night supposedly threw a fit because an employee had put the evil eye on her.
The way I heard it explained was that one of the coffee pots was marked with a wide open eyeball to indicate that it was caffeinated (possibly extra strong) coffee and that the drawing was misinterpreted...

What should we expect from the descendants of the Aztecs? the same we should expect from descendants of every other culture... i cannot think of one where the belief in magic, witchcraft, sorcery or voodoo has not touched... consider who, even today, believes in vampires and zombies... Wicca... from time to time i watch some of those paranormal activity shows--Paranormal Witness and Paranormal State... descendants of Aztecs are not the usual make-up of those telling their stories...
