When the Right Turns on America (Beltway Getting Nervous)
Commentary ^ | 5/19/2014 | Peter Wehner

Posted on 05/20/2014 12:05:51 PM PDT by mojito

Speaking to the National Rifle Association’s recent annual conference, NRA executive vice president and CEO Wayne LaPierre, in describing America, said, “Almost everywhere you look, something has gone wrong. You feel it in your heart, you know it in your gut. Something has gone wrong. The core values we believe in, the things we care about most, are changing. Eroding. Our right to speak. Our right to gather. Our right to privacy. The freedom to work, and practice our religion, and raise and protect our families the way we see fit.”

He went on to say this:

"There are terrorists and home invaders and drug cartels and carjackers and knockout gamers and rapers, haters, campus killers, airport killers, shopping mall killers, road-rage killers, and killers who scheme to destroy our country with massive storms of violence against our power grids, or vicious waves of chemicals or disease that could collapse the society that sustains us all. I ask you. Do you trust this government to protect you? We are on our own."

[....]

This kind of rhetoric, which can only incite and never persuade, is alienating to everyone who is not part of the Apocalypse Now crowd. It is also, in deep ways, profoundly unconservative, in good part because it is overwrought and detached from reality.

I read this article yesterday and found myself agreeing with some of what he wrote. Especially this part, which you did not excerpt:

"But it is quite another thing to describe America as the New Left did in the late 1960s, when America itself was spelled with a “k” (“Amerika”) in an effort to identify it with Nazi Germany. Among the young and left-wing academics there was talk about the need for revolution. The United States was viewed as fundamentally corrupt. Once upon a time conservatives fought against this. Today, however, some on the right are turning on America. They employ language you would associate with Noam Chomsky.

I've seen this kind of thing here on Free Republic, and you see it on some of the libertarian and Paulbot sites. You especially see this on many articles critical of Russia or China, where the knee jerk response is "The U.S. is worse". I'm sorry, that just not true, as bad as Obama has been. It's the pessimism I so often see on Free Republic that depresses me.

Go ahead and flame away, folks. I still believe in America, even if you don't. As RWR said, America's future is bright and we're still the last, best hope of man on earth.

There's still plenty of lobbyist/government/corporate free booze, buffets, limos, shows, etc. all over DC.

He's worried that a collapse of the system might crimp the lifestyle he's grown accustomed to.

Horrors await.

FTA:
“Am I embarrassed to speak for a less than perfect democracy?” the late, great United States Senator (and United Nations Ambassador) Daniel Patrick Moynihan once asked. “Not one bit. Find me a better one. ”
The United States is not a democracy, but a republic rapidly devolving into a democracy. Sadly, the greeks knew and wrote about the dangers of democracy 2K years ago. Pity nobody reads the classics.

I agree with you on that point. We suck, but to say we're worse than China or Russia, in terms of our liberties etc. is absurd.

Obama's here, but Obama will be gone soon. Hopefully, the nation will recognize the damage he's done and banish his political party (and those in the other party who enabled and supported him) to the hinterlands for a long period while we fix things.

We recovered from Carter. This will be harder but doable.

That writing of VDH ripped my heart out.
My 94yo German mother tells me not to own anything when ‘it’ happens. That way you’ll be able to move quickly.
I should take her advise. She speaks from experience.

Today, however, some on the right are turning on America.

A quote from the posted article.

A retort from R2z: Mapoppyalarkeycock!

Some on the right are turning on the GOPe; that's all.

Well frankly, it’s “America” itself that has turned on everything it once was and everything it once stood for. We used to promote things like freedom, liberty and capitalism throughout the world. Now we promote homosex and a poisonous culture of depravity.

The United States was viewed as fundamentally corrupt

Herein lies the difference between the left and conservatives. The left believes that the United States was corrupt at its inception, that the Constitution is a fraud, and that a government created to protect and promote individual liberty is an illusion and a mask to hide historical crimes against identity groups. Thus, working to destroy America and its Constitution are a legitimate goal of politics.

Conservatives believe in America, the Constitution and individual liberty; that America has been a force for good in the history of the world and that our liberties are precious and worth preserving and fighting for.

But conservatives now see our Constitution and our liberties under threat by a culture created by the left in the 1960's and by an ever expanding anti-Constitutional administrative state created in the 1930s that behaves in ever more tyrannical way. In other words, the limited government designed to preserver our liberties has been gradually overthrown by a government that desires to severely limit them, if not remove them all together. And conservatives find this intolerable.

Our founders knew that to preserve liberty from tyranny violence would sometimes be necessary, and that view is at the heart of the Second Amendment. You can not be a thinking person today and not see that our liberties are in jeopardy, not by accident, but by policy pursued avidly by a quasi-Marxist anti-American president and his followers on the left who represent not the interest of free American citizens, but the interests of the regulatory administrative state. Patriots are worried, but they will fight and a day of reckoning is coming.

There are no truer words, nor any greater questions, than these, to ask of those 500 some already in D.C., or those that aspire to get to D.C..

For those in D.C., the question is, “How could you?!?!”
For those with aspirations, “What do YOU intend to do about it?”

If they cannot even accept that these true words exist, they are no better than what was in yesterday’s dog dish.

It isn't actually restricted to the Right, although that has been the most current and obvious manifestation of the broad discontent that is now gripping the country. What is actually turning away is America itself, and what it is turning away from is what has become a ruling class within the eastern urban areas that has systematically worked against America. Mr. Wehner is not America. He was once, I suppose, before the corruption of power set in. But he isn't now.

We have a ruling class that tells us from both sides of the aisle that America is in need of transformation, unanimously to the benefit of big government, unanimously to advance the role government plays in the lives of the citizens, unanimously to control, to regulate, to demand obedience. It is that from which America, not the Right, is turning.

That's very inconvenient and very threatening to the people who figure they've learned how to game the system. A degree from the Columbia School of Journalism, et al, and a cushy job with an alphabet network, and you're set for life. A seat in Congress, a K Street consultancy, a job with a large NGO, a place at the trough. The notion that your in group is somehow entitled to direct the affairs of the nation. The idea that anything up to and including sexual perversion is an integral part of a "new" country that rejects such antiquarian notions as conventional morality. The systemic exploitation of office for personal and family financial gain. The corruption of celebrity that is so very similar to the corruption of power. These are the things from which America is turning away.

Wehner's problem is that fish don't notice the water. This isn't a partisan matter, although it can easily be framed that way by those intent on marginalizing the outrage. Win or lose the election, the cultural war will continue, and it is already at the brink of violence.

alienating to everyone who is not part of the Apocalypse Now crowd

Typical tactic of the Left -- project their failing characteristics on those who oppose them.

The Right is apocalyptic?? -- Hardly!

It's the Left -- persistently, the Left -- that is always scared out of their collective mind with dire warnings about the coming "end of the world" ... what with "global warming" (a.k.a. "climate change"), secondhand smoke, ALAR, DDT, global cooling, heterosexual AIDS, super-sized beverages ... I could go on for days adding to this list!

Very true. The diseased elites of our credentialed society are of the notion that their padded resumes allow them the privilege of lording over us as they systematically deprive us of our liberties. And that we - good untutored sheep that we are - will somehow willingly surrender them without a squabble.

But the animals out in the barnyard are restive and making noises, and farmer Wehner doesn't like the sound of it.

"and it will be “Thank you for your service”!” to every cop wrapped in body armor driving an MRAP."

And that, sir, is the core of the problem.

MANY on our side can't see past party labels...or good/bad objectives.

They do not understand that a police state in a lawless country is bad on it's own merits.

Just look at the left today. They have no problem whatsoever with the most left-wing POTUS in history using the power of the state...even the power of weapons...to enforce "their" view of the way things ought to be.

Those of us on the right should learn from this, do the right thing and dismantle the police state when our turn comes.
