The McConnell challenge that wasn’t
Politico/Playbook ^ | 5/20/14 | JAMES HOHMANN

Matt Bevin seemed like the ideal candidate to challenge Mitch McConnell. The handsome and personable businessman, a father of nine, impressed national conservative groups looking for a chance to knock off the Senate Republican leader.

These groups, from the Senate Conservatives Fund to FreedomWorks, the Tea Party Patriots and the Madison Project, invested more than $1 million in the Kentucky GOP primary. Bevin himself spent more than $3 million, including $1 million of his own fortune.

And, yet, polls indicate he’s going to get creamed Tuesday.

The thing is, whether Reid wins or not, Mitch still gets paid. If Bevin wins, Mitch loses money.

The guy fights for his own self interest. He’d be a Democrat if it got him elected.

Don’t discount lazy voters in mid-terms. Bevin just has to beat the McConnell machine of paid supporters.

Romney was the only candidate who could not counter Obamacare. This is among the main reasons he was a terrible candidate.

Romney lost a winnable election, and he lost by quite a bit...including FL which Bush won in 2004 by half a million.

Romney was a terrible candidate. I was hopeful, but knew in my heart during the primaries he could not win. Despite doing better than I expected in debates and on the stump, he simply drew no one in that could be won by a more articulate, principled conservative that knows how to win people over.

Sorry, I don’t believe he is a good man. He’s a fool at best. A “good man” doesn’t want open borders and amnesty and then at the same time say we should raise the minimum wage when the two are at odds as ideas. This guy is a supposed businessman?

No, Dewhurst was below 50% before the first primary, with Cruz in a solid second place, so we all knew that there was an excellent chance that Cruz would make the run-off; and Cruz was about even with Dewhurst in the polls just before the run-off, so right before the vote we knew that Cruz probably would win.

Bevin is not going to win today’s primary, and KY does not have a run-off, so Bevin won’t get a second chance even if McConnell gets below 50% (which he won’t). A good candidate with a conservative record on which to run (such as Ted Cruz in Texas, Mike Lee in UT, Richard Mourdock in IN before he self-imploded, etc.) perhaps would have beaten McConnell in the primary, and then gone on to trounce Grimey (as she prefers to be called) in the general, but Bevin does not share such characteristics. Bevin should have run for a lower office instead before maybe running for the Senate in a few years.

If the 21% who voted against Boehner helps GOTV for Grimes, Boehner’s a goner.

Taking on a very powerful guy is tough, especially when the crony wing of the party has lined up in lockstep with the failed leadership. This was always an uphill battle, and things just didn’t break for Bevin. This rally he spoke at was small potatoes, but when millions are poured into it, a small misstep becomes more important than a disastrous leadership record.

While voter intensity has equaled the playing field in many elections the past 4 years, money still means a lot.

His campaign failed to drive Maobama’s negatives up. His advisers were overpaid, even if they were receiving minimum wage. ANY wage is too much to pay an idiot. Bob

He wasn’t the worst candidate, but the power of incumbency, especially from a leader who has been bringing home the pork and building his network for years, is hard to beat.

Ref: Harry Reid re-election 2012.

Best message ever. And the way McConnell has trashed the same folks
who he needs to beat Grimes, I would not be surprised or disappointed
if Kentucky Conservatives send a message to McConnell, instead of
sending him back to the Senate.

A win-win would be the Republicans taking the Senate and McConnell losing.

GOP wins Senate, but McConnell loses to Dem. Now THAT would be one helluva message.

THAT is exactly what will happen.

I certainly will not vote for McConnell in November if he wins today.

I will write in a Conservative.

Better the enemy we know than the one that works so hard to stab Conservatives in the back and help Obama and the Democrats establish an oligarchy over us with themselves as absolute rulers.

“Did Bevin really come out in support of dog and cock fighting?”

No, not at all. He attended a fundraiser and another attender of that fundraiser was supportive of legislation to re-instate cock fighting.

“Fox reported that last night.”

Dump Rove network and got with The Blaze. You will be much better informed and much better entertained. The fact that they reported a story that was already debunked WEEKS ago, is proof enough that they are pro-establishment and anti-individual liberty.

Pox on Fox.

I won't believe it until the results are in. But if McConnell does win the primary, I hope the conservative voters in the state hold back their votes for him in the general. Better to let the seat go and have a known enemy on the field to the fore, than a backstabbing double agent wearing our uniform to snipe at us from the rear. We still have a good shot at taking the Senate without him -- and what a message that would send.
