TLANTA – Minneapolis has been awarded the 2018 Super Bowl by NFL owners.

The owners rewarded the Vikings for arranging to build a new stadium on the site of the old Metrodome by choosing Minneapolis over New Orleans and Indianapolis.

The big game will be staged in the Twin Cities for the second time. It was there in 1992, when Washington beat Buffalo.

Minneapolis' new $1 billion stadium is scheduled to open in 2016.

At least we are assured that home field advantage is unlikely to be an issue.

We will never make it to a superbowl so we might as well host one.

yes. I’m assuming the only way the Vikings are there are as spectators.

background on funding, FWIW.

The “e-pull tabs” have been a massive failure.

Yup, nice to see the Vikes will be connected to the Super Bowl (in a way).

They’ll hold it in a cold-weather city if the stadium has a retractable or closed roof. The 2014 Super Bowl, in East Rutherford, NJ, was apparently a waiver of the 50 degree average rule.

Vikings went to four Super Bowls while they played at The Met.

None ever since they moved indoors...Coincidence? I think not.

Anyone who builds a new stadium gets one.

It’s legal extortion.

Which means Green Bay will never get one.

Plus they don’t have enough hotels.

Probably right on both counts. But they might get to play in one. And as brutal as the winters can be in Green Bay, I imagine many of the Packer faithful would welcome a road trip to a warmer part of the country for a few days.

Down here in Texas, we often wonder what it must be like to live above the Arctic Circle in a place like Green Bay, with its permafrost and 10-month winters, where the first snow starts falling in mid-August. ;-)

At least unlike this past Super Bowl, there won’t be a threat of inclement weather turning the game into a potential fiasco, since the stadium itself and much of the area surrounding the stadium are all covered and climate controlled. And the host committee—learning from the very successful Super Bowl at Indianapolis—will try to keep all activities as close to the stadium as possible to minimize weather effects on Super Bowl-related activities during Super Bowl Week.

It’s the only way Viking fans will ever see a Super Bowl.
