Most Americans would rather have a president who believes in God rather than one who doesn't. In a recent study conducted by the Pew Research Center, Americans ranked atheism as the most negative trait that could be displayed by presidential candidates who plan to seek the White House in 2016.
Atheism was ranked the lowest on a list of 16 presidential traits where military service was ranked as the most appealing.
"Not believing in God and never having held elected office before are the most negatively viewed traits among those tested. Just over half (53 percent) say they would be less likely to vote for someone who does not believe in God, while only 5 percent say this would make them more likely to support a candidate," noted an overview of the study.
Voters are also placing less emphasis on Washington experience for candidates seeking the White House, but still don't view candidates who have never held any elected office favorably.
According to the study, 30 percent of voters involved in the study said they would be less likely to support a presidential candidate with "many years" of experience as an elected official in Washington, while some 19 percent viewed the experience favorably. Some 48 percent said extensive experience in Washington wouldn't matter.
For candidates who have never held any elected office, the study noted that 52 percent of voters would be less likely to vote for them. Only 9 percent of voters said inexperience as an elected official would increase the likelihood of them supporting that candidate.
The study was based on telephone interviews conducted April 23-27, 2014, among a national sample of 1,501 adults, 18 years of age or older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, according to the Pew Research Center.
They would probably also elect a vegetarian animal loving non-smoking, non-drinking decorated war veteran who had no history of sexual misconduct, so long as the media told them to vote for him.
That would be Adolf, if I remember correctly, in a certain Teutonic state in Europe...
You remember correctly.
Americans More Likely to Vote for a [lying] Cheating, Pot-Smoking Gay President...Again.
This is nothing more than people deluding themselves by pretending to a morality they don’t practice. If military service was the most desireable experience and atheism the most abhorrent, then how did decorated, recognized war hero John McCain lose to atheistic modernist Barack Obama?
It would be nice if this were true, but the facts belie the assertion.
And yet they voted for a Christ-mocker in 2008 and 2012:
Christians see this and respond accordingly.
Because the Christiana like Barry-O and Billy Jeff did so well...
Why did they ask about a woman president, but not a man?
You are correct. Most devout evangelical atheists, as I call them, are nothing more than anti-Christian. Logically, if they were truly atheistic, they would not care if anyone were Christian or practiced their belief openly.
RE: Why did they ask about a woman president, but not a man?
Because we are one of the few countries in the developed world that NEVER had a woman President?
~~~Americans More Likely to Vote for a Cheating, Pot-Smoking or Gay President~~~
Well, that certainly explains 1992, 1996, 2008 and 2012.
But still it would be interesting to see how many would be less likely to vote for a man just because of his genitalia.
2% are more likely to vote for a candidate who has had an extra-marital affair? Really??
I can see that an affair can hurt your image and appeal, but stunned that among some people, it actually enhances your appeal as a candidate. Wow.........
50% of Americans have to be some of the dumbest people on Earth.
And here we are, stuck in the middle of many of them.
You might add, foreign-born.
Because lots of people realized he is crazy?
The stupid party and the evil party will do all they can to give us this choice, or one even worse. *sigh*
"Evangelical" means good-news-bringing. I would call them "kakangelical"--bad-news-bringing--even though that's not a real word.
By “he,” I assume you mean Mcain. Yes, he’s battier than a Transylvania belfry, but weighed against obamateur’s atheism, ignorance, and lack of military experience (or experience of any sort for that matter), McCain’s record should have swept him into office on a magic carpet. Instead, the easily-led crowd, whipped to a froth by Bush Derangement Syndrome and salivating at vague promises of Hope and Change, abandoned reason and voted for a candidate that shouldn’t have ever been elected Sewage Commissioner, let alone president.
This poll is just wishful thinking.
Wow. Maybe there’s hope for you people after all.
