It is entirely possible that the Democrats will turn on the President. On reflection, I don't think they are existentially wedded to him.

There is no doubt a large proportion of Democrats who privately curse the incompetent arrogance of the President, but cannot find a way to disown him and move on without fatal loss of face. The Select Committee, were it to find that impeachable offenses were committed, provides the Democrat Party with a means to disown the President and abandon support based on regrettable incident rather than failure of ideology.

There is a tipping point. Finding it, and pressing on it until it caves, would do a service.
