PetSmart is the latest major pet food retailer to say it will stop selling dog and cat treats made in China because of ongoing fears that they are making pets sick.
The company plans to have the treats off all of its store shelves by March 2015.
"This is something we've been working toward for some time, and feel it's the right thing to do for pets and our customers," said PetSmart spokeswoman Erin Gray.
Investigators at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration haven't been able to prove that treats made in China are making pets ill. But since 2007, it has received more than 4,800 complaints of pet illnesses and more than 1,000 reports of dog deaths after eating Chinese-made chicken, duck or sweet potato jerky treats.
In an update of its investigation last week, the FDA said it found that antiviral drug amantadine...

hey, didn’t we have a similar dilemma with chinese drywall a few years ago?
It’s about time.
March 2015? So they are going to keep on killing dogs for another year?
off all of its store shelves by March 2015.
2015? do they stock THAT MUCH of the stuff??
Costco needs to do the same. Was there yesterday and saw plenty of “Made in China” dog treats on the shelves
we posted the same thought seconds apart!
Neary a YEAR its going to take for WHAT...ha;ting the sale of the crapola of finding another SUPPLIER....before halting the sales??
u have to wonder what they are making pet food out of in Chinese. and at the same time, I am pretty sure 200 million Chinese residents are always looking for their missing pets.
I can just imagine dog treats made out of stuff the Chinese won’t eat.
At least dog’s are getting some protection, but people don’t know whether their chicken came from China or not.
I guess we have to wait until we have 1000+ people deaths. Of course linking those deaths to china when the products aren’t labeled is going to be really difficult.
Exactly..every pet death I hear about has to do with food or jerky treats made in China..our dogs only eat their special wet and dry WD and ID pet food since they both have sensitive stomachs..food is made in the USA
Maybe it isn’t treats at all. Maybe it is the evil drug Trifexis.
this debacle is beginning to sound like a hannibal movie, can u just imagine finding out that your dog/cat has been eating food/treats made from “their own kind”?, thats like eating at an asian restaurant and later finding out u were actually eating well done liver.(but not lamb or cow liver).
This has been going on since at least 2007, I remember Tammy Bruce writing a lot about poisonous pet food at that time as well as toothpaste & monkfish.
About friggin’ time.
More than a few years ago, but truth be told, Drywall from Florida had issues with too much radioactive matter as well and likely still does, so you have to be careful of your source no matter where it comes from, but China will always be a Red Flag as far as I’m concerned.
once this story gets out and 200 million people find out, gee,we will next see Chinese restaurants closing down cause no one wants to eat there anymore?
Well, it will take a year for the doggies to eat them all.
I stopped buying Chinese dog treats, and all Chinese dog foods three years ago. I love my dog too much to poison her with cheap food, even though she probably would eat whatever I give her.
so now what is Moe Tse Dung going to do with 9 Trillion square feet of pet foods? sell it to Russia at a discount price?
You might be wondering what happens to the organs if they don't get from the donor to the recipient fast enough...
Just look for it to be shipped to another country and repackaged like they do with honey.
yeah, the chicoms made that go away by switching the factory over to producing pet treats, same raw material though.
I wish I could say I admire their plan...but it doesnt appear to be as thoughtful as Id expect.
Same here. I always check country of origin for all dog treats.
Of course, I’ll eat anything!
Everything made in China should be tossed into the garbage. That filthy country is poisoning more than our dogs. Our economy is suffering too.
I had a parakeet that got sick circa 2007 and the first thing the vet asked me was, do you buy bird seed from China. I didn’t and the problem wasn’t from that, but it goes to show you that Chinese pet products of all kind have a terrible rep.
Yes they do. I buy expensive cat food from PetCo that's labeled Made in USA, but wish I didn't have to spend so much. Hope your parakeet recovered.
I was in the Costco in the Tustin (CA) District earlier this month and none were there. Maybe Costco is clearing out the stock at your store. I am sure Costco will drop the Chinese stuff once people stop buying it as they depend on high volume sales.
Wait until humans start dying because a large percentage of active pharmaceutical ingredients (especially antibacterial agents) are made in China and exported world wide.
I was at the one in Van Nuys yesterday and still saw some Made in China Jerky Treats..I was looking since I heard a story on CBS 2 a few days ago about a dog dying after eating those treats..I forgot the brand name but I did see other brands that did say made in China..I hope they do clear out their stock because not everyone is aware that giving those treats to dogs can be deadly
“I can just imagine dog treats made out of stuff the Chinese wont eat.”
You just gave a perfect ad slogan for free.
If that’s a valid report -March, 2015 - I will never set foot in another petsmart store....and neither will my human.
The Chinese are the makers of adulterated everything. I won’t give my dog Chinese made food and I won’t eat food from the mainland either
There in rests the question we should ALL be asking ourselves.
I don't know about your neck of the woods, but Oriental restaurants here "typically" are the lowest rated by Health Departments, and get the most high profile complaints.
Great point. Our previous pup started having seizures a few years ago and died a year later of reoccurring events. I couldn't prove it, but we did notice that we had given him a few bacon strip treats a few days before. Not proof, but highly suspicious that the product was made in China.
As far as waiting an entire year, back in the early '80's, Tylenol had all their product off the shelf in a manner of a day or two when the tampering scare happened. An event that changed product packaging forever. I think a year is unacceptable.
if anything,it may cause a domino affect, especially with our millions of pet owners.the ones that dine out time to time will probably have second thoughts about eating chinese with this scandal going viral.,it will be like them saying, god,u mean i may be poising my own dog?,i don’t think i will be eating chinese anytime soon.
Infants can’t say ‘Mommy, this apple juice tastes funny’...
Well then I guess Petsmart won’t be selling any dog chews because recently I went there to get some and every bag said “made in China”. I finally got some in the grocery store.
“I guess we have to wait until we have 1000+ people deaths. Of course linking those deaths to china when the products arent labeled is going to be really difficult.”
So true. Now half the stuff only says “distributed by so and so in Cincinnati or wherever. That’s codespeak for made in China as far as we are concerned. We just put it back on the shelf.
That's what I think too. "Distributed by" without a "Made in USA" designation throws up a big red flag.
Wife just tossed about $40 worth of dog treats after hearing about this...
Be sure to check frozen vegetables for country of origin...found that the frozen asparagus we bought was from China...didn’t eat it...went straight to the trash...always looking now...at EVERYTHING!
