The Han Chinese have done similar things in their history when they felt that was an existential need.
They are sort of doing it now. They have been moving Han Chinese (the majority ethnic group) into Xinjiang for years now, and the Han have recently become the majority. I think a lot of this unrest is that the Amish see themselves as being "gentrified."
