Thailand's army chief has announced that the military is taking control of the government.

The coup came after two days of inconclusive talks between the main political factions.

Thailand has been in political turmoil for months. On Tuesday the army imposed martial law.

A curfew has been declared, effective across the country from 22:00 to 05:00 local time.

Political party leaders, including opposition leader Suthep Thaugsuban, were taken away from the talks venue after troops sealed off the area......

[ I just finished up a one year holiday in Thailand. ]

I’ve heard the people there are extremely laid back as if the water is spiked with some sorta soma.... Is this true?

Thank you. Yes all is quiet and every reason to think it will remain quiet.. The only noticeable part so far are soldiers in the streets

Now's your chance to get an automatic weapon! Just knock one of them on the head and grab it!

I sure hope this doesn’t negatively affect the sex tourist trade.

It won't. By the way, I highly recommend the Firecat Lounge.

Click it. You can trust me. I am so pure and chaste, you need not fear a link I present, especially a link that points to a known Thailand sex-bar in Patpong 1 (the sex district). I promise you there is nothing to fear, and I encourage you to click the link, especially if you are at work.

Honest Injun.

Thailand has the strangest coups. The army steps in and dissolves the government, but the king is never touched. He stands aloof as if he is uninvolved, yet it seems obvious the army is doing his bidding. One would think it would be simpler to create some constitutional way of doing this without the need of military action.

Agreed. The former prime minister is the sister no good. She and her cohorts paid for votes, and have been taking advantage of their fellow countrymen. The revolution in Thailand is BY CAPITALISTS!! They drove her out and are making sure the lazy welfare mommas and daddas don’t get their “savior” in again. Kudos to the Thai Military for stepping up to protect their nation against corruption. And in this case God bless the middle class, upper class, highly educated, who see thru the corruption and are taking a stand.

actually the Thai way is the quickest, cleanest, least deadly way to do it. As long as this king lives things will never get out of hand like in Egypt, etc. But Lord help them if his rotten son ever gets power.

I think that is pretty true in any tropical climate. The heat and humidity are not exactly conducive to a great work ethic.

What’s wrong with his son? I don’t know any thing about Thailand’s politics.

“Kudos to the Thai Military for stepping up to protect their nation against corruption.”

Oh, come on. Corruption is a way of life in Thailand. Pretty much EVERYONE is compromised. Even the basically honest ones have to deal with it because it is practically expected.

Just for starters, the entire country runs on “Patron-client” relationships. The Puu Yai [big shot] bestows favors, and the underlings provide loyalty.

When one peasant has a problem with another peasant, they run to their respective Puu Yais, and plead for help. The Puu Yais get together, there’s some jockeying to determine who is the bigger Puu Yai, or whether the Puu Yai on one side should go to one of his patrons to kick matters up a level, and it gets sorted out. Similar to a Mafia dispute.
