Interesting question. I’ll try to answer it. I have met McDaniel at a few party social events and he has spoken frequently in our county. I know some of his supporters much better than I know him.

One thing we do know that the Democrats don’t do is fight each other. The term RINO was cute for about a day when Rush(I believe) coined the phrase. The chorus became much louder when the democrats and the media were more than happy to support the conservative movements’ destruction of our own party. Our own derisive mantra dangerously weakened our party.

Back to McDaniel. In the 2010 race the Tea Party was born and they performed a great thing by becoming active and motivated to get out and vote the “rascals out.” We did well when the newly active voters came off the sidelines. Two years later the Tea Party became the cocky party and fielded several candidates who just couldn’t constrain themselves, so they became embarasments to themselves and the party. Opportunities were everywhere for ambitious activists to pick the low fruit, and a few of them were superb, and they got elected. Most didn’t. Which brings me to the question about McDaniel. I have found him arrogant, and cocky, and he portrays a certain inevitability that is not justified by his background. He is no Senator Cruz, nor Paul, nor Rubio, but he sees himself that way. He and his supporters continue to be derisive and destructive to the overall party and we can now see where that leads. He rolled in the outside money and had his own super bus with his ego splashed all over it, cocky and sure. The media played along, naturally.

If he is elected, and I seriously doubt that he will be, the media will turn on him immediately. They have always been smug about the south and particularly of Mississippi. We have some very good elected officials. Only one statewide elected democrat so we’re doing quite well, thank you.

These are my thoughts alone. Some of my friends, mostly young ones, support McDaniel zealously. I really don’t think they can see the possible negative results of his election.

As I stated earlier on another post, if he wins the primary, he’ll have my vote, because I know how important one vote can be. He will be sorely tainted no matter the outcome of the criminal charges floating around. I do not intend to support the Democrats in even the smallest way. They prove in a constant march forward that they will maintain their harmony.

A lot of wisdom there.

I don’t like the term RINO and don’t use it very often. The problem I see a lot is people pronouncing somebody a RINO on the basis of one position, one incident or one unfortunate comment. I see it on Twitter a d FR too. I prefer to look for patterns over long periods if time. Cochran probably has these, but he will probably win.

I have concluded that a big part of the problem is the Internet in general and social media in particular and talk radio too. Although these things accomplish a lot of good, you do have a bunch of people who need to find content every day and sometimes it’s manufactured drama or worse, as with these characters in MS.

I know people often say that the Democrats don’t do this, but I think they do, maybe less and in different ways. There’s no love lost between Obama and the Clintons, for example. I think Obamas motto may be “keep your friends close but your enemies closer.” The original birther was a disgruntled Hillary supporter. I think it was John Kerry who called Clinton “an unusually good liar.” I think that Howard Dean has lots of enemies. And of course it goes way back to the open dislike between LBJ and the Kenneedys.

I’m laughing at your last line realizing that I go back even farther than that. FDR was president when I was born and Ike was my commander in chief when I was in the Air Force. I have known two presidents and met a third and fourth. So, color me old.

He certainly doesn’t sound arrogant here, here sounds fantastic:

He points out that Cochran generally can’t find a spending bill he doesn’t support—but he twice voted against funding a border fence.

I think the tea party is fantastic and the Democrats don’t have anything near the RINO phenomenon which the GOP has. It is real and it is a killer for our country. No, the tea party isn’t perfect, but they’re not the only ones who have put up losing candidate types. McCain? Romney? Dole?

The GOPe and their old-school crony capitalism are major problems in the country, and it sounds to me like McDaniel would be one good improvement loosening their grip on the party and the country.

I can’t disagree with you about McCain, and Dole. I thought Romney would have made a good President.

Maybe that’s because you (and others) didn’t know him like I did—having been in the MA GOP in his gubernatorial days.

It’s interesting how people form their opinions politically. For instance, President Nixon is one of the most reviled past presidents in history. Most of the press accounts about him and his presidency reinforce that impression. I think of him as a great president with personal flaws, something that is shared by us all. I knew President Nixon, and served briefly in his administration through an appointment by him to the Cost of Living Council. He also appointed me to the White House Council on the Ageing. I was in the Oval office with him on a couple of occasions and I saw a different person than one would expect from the historians. He had a sense of humor and was a very quick decision maker.
