Detroit motorists under siege in 'Carjack City'
AP via Yahoo ^ | 5/23/2014 | Associated Press By COREY WILLIAMS

DETROIT (AP) — When they pull up to a gas station these days, Detroit drivers are looking beyond the price per gallon at a far more threatening concern: carjackers.

The armed auto thieves have become so common here that parts of the bankrupt metropolis are referred to as "Carjack City," and many motorists fear getting out of their vehicles even for a few moments to fill a tank.

So gas stations are taking steps to protect customers, and the city has formed a special police team to go after suspects. Convicted carjackers will even get their faces and prison sentences plastered onto billboards.

"You need to catch these people and make a good example of them," said Mousa Bazzi, who owns a Mobil station in a semi-desolate neighborhood bordering Detroit's east riverfront. He keeps his business well-lit and continually has two to four employees inside to ensure "there's always an extra hand or two" in case of trouble.

Authorities blame many of the carjackings, ironically, on improvements in vehicle security. Anti-theft equipment, GPS systems and advanced locks now prevent many vehicles from being driven without a key in the ignition.

Oh man, a citizen carrying a sidearm to protect himself and his property.

Good.

I recall an article from several years ago that some cars in South Africa were being fitted with flame throwers to roast carjackers on either side of the cars. I don’t suppose that would be legal here...

Good. Let’s pray they never have to be put to use in such a situation but it’s good to know.

Sounds like some dangerous stuff up there.

Yeah, they did it.

Might be just a tiny bit dangerous in a gas station.

If I heard it correctly, it sounded like 720 carjackings in 1 or 2 years.

Detroit police reported 720 carjackings last year in the city of fewer than 700,000 people. That's down from nearly 850 in 2011 and 1,231 in 2008.

Armed citizens and a police chief who actually does the job are making a difference.

According to this Cam&Co interview with Craig says many crime rates are falling hard and fast.

I googled:

inline fuel valve

automatic inline fuel valve

wireless inline fuel valve

Doesn’t seem to be anything in existence that can be turned off after the fact. Also, most seem to be made for non-auto engines.

Good idea. Maybe a market for a new product.

In the Cam&Co interview Craig says carjackings are down some 33% from last year.

I knew it would take a few years but between armed citizens and a police department actually doing the job, the crime rate is coming down.

I remember the article (in the WSJ); I don’t know if that was legal even in South Africa at the time. Even better than the flames were the blades that would cut off the perp’s feet at the shins. Imagine living somewhere that this even has to be considered?

The solution is a billboard campaign with the police chief and the mayor smiling, saying:

“It’s Legal to Shoot Carjackers!”

You could hook a bluetooth app to it on your phone also, wireless and easy to install.

Just hook a switch in-line with your fuel pump power feed circuit and PRESTO! Car dead on the street.

Not a bad idea for teenagers as well...

Might be more useful for a few pictures of the bodies of prospective carjackers, foiled by armed occupants, to be displayed on the billboards.

With an accompanying billboard sponsored by a Coalition of Lawyers offering ‘free’ services to the HijackeD - if charged.

Spread both campaigns to Home Invasion and Street Muggings and you would see crime drop dramatically.

I realize the lawyers would not be all that pleased having to offer free services BUT if they did, they would be ‘watch dogging’ the police when it comes to charging ‘victims’ for defending themselves.

Only problem with that is that Bluetooth is good for about 30 feet. Now, using a cellular connection would work.

Coupled with a firm policy that, in the event a taxpayer shoots somebody with a criminal record, the DA will automatically get the grand jury to "no bill" the case, and no further investigation will be done.

In the old west, they shot horse thieves or hung them when they caught them. Perhaps we need to go back to the old west ways as it definitely solves the problem of the perps ever becoming repeat criminals.

Soon there will be no gas stations in Detroit for lack of customers, and they’ll be bitching about that. Many of the grocery stores have closed due to shoplifting / vandalism.

OK, how about a fuel shut-off kicking in when your phone minute after it stops communicating with the shut-off valve? This is doable. But...better keep your phone charged!

What grocery stores? I’ve read that Detroit has no, zero actual “food stores” (such as Kroger, Jewel, Food Lion, etc.). They all hit the road some time ago.

Flamethrowers under the rocker panels on cars in S.A. I recall that too.

During the riots in Cincinnati about fifteen years ago I had to travel into a feral neighborhood to retrieve my (then) wife from her job at a hospital. I stopped at an auto parts store and picked up two cans of engine degreaser. Paired with my cigar lighter, they made very effective flame throwers - 15 to 20 feet. VERY EFFECTIVE deterrent when the ferals began to advance. One blast of flame and they set their sights elsewhere without getting within thirty feed of me.

Did not even need to show them Mr. Glock who was in my lap.

My exact point. It’s hard to find any grocery store except small convenience types. I haven’t seen any major chain grocery store there in years. I don’t think “Food Lion” is anywhere in Michigan, at least I’ve never seen one.

It would in Texas. You’d get bad press, but if the toasted carjacker had an equally toasted weapon, it could very well be justified use of deadly force against a felon committing a crime.
