The U.S. military is shedding European real estate including a golf course, skeet range and hotel, as well as facilities like a munitions storage facility, as it looks to save cash during a U.S. budget crunch.
... The decision to turn the 21 sites to Germany, Italy, Denmark, Greece, the United Kingdom and Belgium would save about $60 million a year. Still, it is only the first step in reductions that will be ordered through an ongoing look at America's military footprint in Europe, called the European Infrastructure Consolidation review.

Air Force hardest hit.
Gotta scrape up some money for Pvt. Manning’s sex change operations.
Too bad. I’ve had great visits at MWR locations in Germany. And the Wiesbaden golf course is a really fine benefit for the troops. And don’t think it was free. We paid. In fact, I paid more at Wiesbaden than I did at our local course yesterday for 18 and a cart. If we’re departing a community, then there’s no justification for holding onto most property.
We’ve been ‘shedding real estate’ in Germany since 1993 when the post Cold War reductions began. the Army has only 2 combat brigades left in Europe, one in Germany and one in Italy.
The Wiesbaden course is probably still there as USAREUR HQ completed its move from Heidelberg to Wiesbaden last fall. Everything in Heidelberg has been returned to the Germans.

I have an idea:
Close most bases and let havoc reign in Erwope.
We can then lend equipment and our services on lease....
Worked before...
I lived in Fintherlandstrasse which is not really in Weisbaden, it’s across the river in Mainz. Nice apartments built by the French when they were the occupying force after the war. Schwartzkopf was my neighbor
I hadn’t heard that USAREUR was moving to Wiesbaden. I think I’d read somewhere that Heidelberg was closing. I’d always assumed they’d consolidate most everything around Ramstein or Grafenwoehr. Last I left in 2000 (and retired in 2002), Wiesbaden’s air strip was able to handle only a limited variety of aircraft.
So when are we going to start selling our US federal lands and resources to their rightful owners - the Russians and Chinese?
Here is an 2012 article about the move plan.

Ven,
We’ve already closed 85-90% of our Cold War bases in Germany, Belgium, Holland, Britain and Italy.
All of the kasernes I was stationed at during my 7 years in 3rd Armored division have been closed since 2006. and 2 of them were among the last to close.
Thanks GreyFriar. It’s a good area, close to some of my favorite places: Rudesheim is a great little town worthy of visiting; and the Abby of St Hildegaard is right down the river. The fussganger zone in Wiesbaden is very good, too, as is the palace. There are some great river fortresses up and down the Rhine near Wiesbaden, and I think there’s a floating fireworks display down the river between some of those old fortresses late in the year.
I made a trip to Heidelberg in August, 2008 and visited the posts I had been assigned to and all were closed down.
Still got 50,000+ people there.
Leave, let em destabilize, sell em what they need to restore order.
Europeans are douche bags and don’t mind objectifying us for their needs/wants.
Fk em. I don’t wanna be their outsourced ass kickers if we can’t get any more respect than what we get.
I say we prove to the world our values and their worth.
Until certain countries declared war on us!
Reduce the Armed Forces to spend trillions on preferred projects.
How’d that work out for any of em?
All countries who have ever engaged in war against us, have sent more men than returned.
We don’t like being messed with.
