Windsor's 'hum' traced to Michigan

WINDSOR, Ont. — Once again, and $60,000 later, scientists have confirmed the existence of the mysterious "Windsor hum."

The vibrations that have irritated west-end residents of Windsor, Ont., for at least two years are real — and likely coming from Zug Island, home to a U.S. Steel plant in River Rouge, Mich., across the Detroit River — according to a Canadian report released Friday in Windsor.

Now, the feds hope the Americans can take over, maybe even make it stop.

"The scientists have hypothesized that the (U.S. Steel plant's) blast furnace is the likely source," said Windsor MP Jeff Watson. "Now we are going to turn to the Americans."

He said the study calls for more research on the fenced industrial zone of Zug Island, which would have to be done by U.S. scientists.

Foreign Affairs has sent results of the study — which show for the first time a "defineable pattern, frequencies and levels," Watson said — to Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and River Rouge Mayor Michael Bowdler.

Complaints of a mysterious hum have been going on for years in Windsor's west end, but early in 2011 the environment ministry was flooded with hundreds of reports. Since then, scientists have investigated several theories, ruling out wind turbines, earthquakes and industrial causes such as a nearby salt mine.

Watson said the latest report — the result of "inconclusive" work by Western University professor Peter Brown and acoustic underwater tests led by University of Windsor professor Colin Novak — was worth the cost because it armed the Canadian government with measurable proof.

“Three years ago we had reports of a phenomenon and it was like, who even knows if it is real," he said. "Now we have a much more qualified lead and something credible to approach our American partners with."

Guy in a bar says to the piano player, “ Do you know the way to the restroom?”

Piano player says, “No, but if you would hum a few bars I can fake it.”

Funny, when I think of a hum, I think of electrical things, like transformers, fluorescent lights, radio noise, and things like that. Electrical things. You know, like the huge Ontario Hydro electrical plant just across the river from the U. S. Steel plant. You know, like the one in Windsor, Ontario?

"The scientists have hypothesized that....
That used to be a respected phrasing... Amazing how today it initiates suspicion of the proposed process for correction.

What? We still have a steel plant operational in this country?

Who knew?

Yep, you can just see it across the river from Zug Island in the pic I posted.

A guy from Detroit patented some kind of revolutionary flash hardening process for steel a couple of years ago. He was smart enough to call it “green” because it uses less water and chemicals.

Yep, there are still some smart folks around Detroit. Gary Cola is a self taught metallurgist who developed this flash hardening process that makes stronger lighter steel in 10 seconds rather than hours or days.

the result of "inconclusive" work by Western University professor Peter Brown and acoustic underwater tests led by University of Windsor professor Colin Novak — was worth the cost because it armed the Canadian government with measurable proof.

If it is inconclusive then that means that no conclusion could be drawn.

How can that be "measurable proof"?

But it's very nature inconclusive work can not be used as proof.

It looks like the author inserted this into the article. I wonder why?
