POUGHKEEPSIE >> Former Dutchess County Legislator Fred Knapp, once a major player in the county’s Democratic Party, has been charged with stealing nearly $400,000 from the town of Beekman while serving as the town’s comptroller, according to the county District Attorney’s Office. Knapp’s arrest comes six months after his wife pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors and agreed to resign as Democratic elections commissioner.

Fran Knapp, 61, had been indicted by a Dutchess County grand jury for 46 felonies and 48 misdemeanors, including 41 felony counts of misconduct by an elections official and 41 misdemeanor counts of official misconduct.

She ultimately pleaded guilty to signing a poll watcher’s certificate in 2012 that she was not authorized to sign and to falsifying a treasurer’s report for her husband’s 2007 Poughkeepsie mayoral campaign.

POUGHKEEPSIE 11/08/11 — William Grady was unopposed in his bid for an eighth four-year term as the county’s top prosecutor.

He polled 36,973 votes.

Grady, 69, is a Republican who also ran on the Conservative and Independence lines. He was ?elected the county’s district attorney in 1983. He began his career in the District Attorney’s Office in 1970 as an assistant district attorney.

Knapp was a chump. If he had a Democratic DA he could have stolen a hot stove and come back for the smoke.
