GM (GM, Fortune 500) has raised the number of frontal-impact crashes linked to the problem ignitions to 47 from 32, according to company spokesman Greg Martin.
Because of the flawed ignition, key rings holding more than one key could cause the ignition to suddenly switch to the off position. That can lead to a loss of power -- locking the steering wheel and interrupting airbags from deploying in an accident.
GM says the number of deaths tied to front impact crashes stemming from this defect remains at 13.
On Friday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reportedly said the number of deaths tied to the problem was likely higher.
"The final death toll associated with this safety defect is not known to NHTSA, but we believe it's likely that more than 13 lives were lost," NHTSA said in a statement reported by the Detroit News. GM spokesman Jim Cain said the automaker was aware of the report and that "if necessary we will adjust the number."
NHTSA has not responded to CNN's requests for comment.

GM has been making crappy ignition switches FOREVER. Our ‘72 Impala’s broke (in ‘79) and our 1994 Caprice’s broke (in 2013). By now you’d think they’d address the problem.
I never carry anything on my ignition key. It is a pain, but I know the strain on the ignition switch is real. Cost me over $130 to have it fixed years ago.
I don't know why car manufacturers don't make the ignition switch capable of holding 20 lbs. It seems like at most a $1 increase in materials.

I love America, but I don’t trust union-dominated American cars, especially now that they’re all mobbed up with the feds.
It’s all about the money. If they can save a fraction of a cent on a part, they’ll do it.

Companies in the auto industries have done things like changing a gear from cast iron to plastic to save cost. However if the gear fails it costs hundreds for the owner.
Built in obsolescence. It will last beyond the warranty period then it’s not their problem.
I purchase Ford product and haven’t had any problems with engine or transmissions for decades. Just usual maintenance.
On GM not so good. That’s why I changed and see no compelling reason to change back.
