The Obama administration said Saturday it will allow more veterans to obtain health care at private hospitals and clinics in an effort to improve their treatment.

Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki also said VA facilities are enhancing capacity of their clinics so veterans can get care sooner. In cases where officials cannot expand capacity at VA centers, the Department of Veterans Affairs is "increasing the care we acquire in the community through non-VA care," Shinseki said.

Lawmakers from both parties have pressed for this policy change as the VA confronts allegations about treatment delays and falsified records at VA centers nationwide....

why don’t they just get networks of providers that already sell polices to sell one for VA compensated care? why should the government compete against the .com or .org sectors by having its own hospitals which they frankly suck at running??

Because then veterans will be like Medicaid and Obamacare enrollees. Holding a piece of paper with no doctors that will honor it.

My 85 year old father in law uses the VA as his primary care and was informed two days ago he may now get his cataracts repaired at a private doctor and the VA will cover the procedure.

The VA clinic here forced me to ride an ambulance to a nearby private hospital for a bad leg infection in early April. I just got the statement and I pay nothing. Terrible food, since they had me on their diabetic diet, but great care from the minute I got there to 4 days later when I left.

I finally decided to apply for my VA medical benefits about 6 - 7 months ago when I got home here in Miss. A couple of days ago I got a call from the local VA Outpatient Clinic to set up an initial screening. I have an appointment for next Thursday. My wife and have heard good news about this clinics service and their ability to get patients access to local services and even doctors who say they are no longer taking new patients. I am in generally good health except for a hip problem which at times limits my activities.

I am also covered by my wife’s health plan at Wal-Mart and Medicare. She says I am really over covered.

I hope what we have heard about this clinic’s service turns out to be fact.

I haven’t had an American-born primary physician since I left the Army in 1983. Having said that, something is better than nothing.

From the article: "The Obama administration said Saturday it will allow more veterans to obtain health care at private hospitals and clinics in an effort to improve their treatment. "

Viewed slightly differently:

"The Obama administration said Saturday that it will no longer disallow veterans from obtaining health care at private hospitals and clinics due to sub-standard treatment."

What is it they say? "A government powerful enough to give you everything you want, is powerful enough to take everything you have."

If Obama truly has the power to allow veterans to obtain care in the private sector, why has he failed to use this power when we know now that its use was essential to the welfare of veterans.

That’s something I don’t understand. You should be able to walk in with a DD214 and immediately be put into the system. That’s the way it happened with me. The lady put my name in the computer and a few weeks later I had an appointment.

I had an American/caucasion PCP three docs back. He was totally worthless. He was elderly and he’d only been with the VA a few months and apparently didn’t stay long.

I signed up on line. And received an acceptance letter within two weeks saying they would contact me with a date for my first screening. So I waited.

If you have a verifiable service related disability you may receive additional tax-free compensation in addition to treatment.

A 214 doesn’t get you anything. You have to be service connected disabled to use the VA. If you have 50 percent you get fill coverage if less you get your disability covered. The whole process took me about 18 months to get approved once
I retired.

I’ve applied for that since I recently learned that I was exposed to agent orange. I’ve got heart eschemia, diabetes and neuropathy. These three are on the list. I’ve read that if you were exposed it’s “assumed” that your maladies were caused by the toxin. I’ve read other places that you have to prove they were caused by the toxin. I’m sure I’ll be getting a rejection letter in a few weeks. They told me they’d have an answer by then.
