Big Brother alert: Cameras in the cable box to monitor TV viewers
Washington Times ^ | Cheryl K. Chumley

Posted on 05/24/2014 8:17:57 PM PDT by Jack Hydrazine

It hardly gets more Orwellian than this. New technology would allow cable companies to peer directly into television watchers’ homes and monitor viewing habits and reactions to product advertisements.

The technology would come via the cable box, and at least one lawmaker on Capitol Hill is standing in opposition.

There are microphones inside, too.

No more loosening your tie and slouching, while you watch TV on the couch, and it’s probably best if your wife doesn’t sit next to you, at least if you still find her attractive.

I remember back in the 1970s people talking about this as a conspiracy theory. Now it’s reality!

Time to put an antenna in the attic or on the roof & learn to live with fewer stations. I’ve got Netflix streaming (no DVD service) and a Roku. Cable will be going within the next month.

I’m researching for the best attic antenna right now. I’m narrowing it down. But I welcome any suggestions based on experience.

I’ll post a picture of Helen Thomas, Photoshopped...NUDE in front of it.

Maybe make bobble head of her in the nude and put an oscillating fan near it, to enhance movement.

Considering the location of my Cable/DVR box, the best view they’ll ever get on mine would be underneath my couch and recliner along with the carpet.

“Old tech electrical tape over the front!”

Peanut butter would do the job too.

Bondo.

Hot Glue.

Superglue.

Lots of solutions. Would work for Mic openings too, though you might have to use a syringe.

I wonder what they would do if you opened it up and disconnected the mic and cam?

I guess for fun you could do an art project in front of your tv that involves sticking wires into a block of clay and hooking those wires to an alarm clock.

Oh, it’s just an innocent marketing tool! They will use it only so they can provide commercials that are less annoying and programming that doesn’t suck as hard. And who wouldn’t mind being monitored a little in exchange for an enhanced TV-viewing experience ? /s

RE:”I remember back in the 1970s people talking about this as a conspiracy theory. Now it’s reality!”

I recall my parents first got cable when it first came available to us in the mid 1970s.

Back then it was simple frequency multiplexing with hardware switching in a box with a button for each channel, that box served as a remote control with a long wire.

MY FIOS DVR cable boxes are minicomputers connected directly to my internet modem(they wont work without it ) , that's why they must be rebooted frequently .

Thats why I just assumed they know what my box is tuned to..

Here we need sales cards to get sales prices in most grocery stores. So if only a few people buy large amounts of items on sale they know to not put it on sale.

Its the world we live in now.
