GOLETA, Calif. (AP) — A man whose son was among the victims killed in a shooting rampage near a California university quaked with grief and rage Saturday as he described his "lost and broken" family and the proliferation of guns he believes led to his son's death.
"Our son Christopher and six others are dead," Richard Martinez told reporters gathered outside a sheriff's station for a news conference the day after the shootings near the University of California, Santa Barbara, where the 20-year-old son was a sophomore. "You don't think it'll happen to your child until it does."

Tragic but what if he had been killed by a car instead?
Much more common than gun deaths. Would he had called for banning cars?

The father is more political than rational. Watched him on TV and he sounds as crazy as the murderer doe in his rants.

So we have this guy crying for gun control and totally neglecting his role in this tragedy. He was the closest to the problem and yet did nothing but provide lip service. Typical lib.

Mr. Martinez, I am very sorry for your loss, but you are wrong about the cause. Your analogy that the gun was at fault, would be like saying that Hitler didn’t kill 6 million Jews, it was the zyklon-b pellets.

He was a spoiled brat no different from a baby, and when baby gets mad baby breaks his toys. He saw other people as his play things and when he didn’t get his way he went into a temper tantrum just like a baby. And how old is he? Oh that’s right, 22....So in other words he’s an adult yet had the mentality of a baby and of course there were no signs of this. My ASS.

The guy has an agenda. Eliminate or control your rights to own and use guns.

The gun was not laying there, planning for someone to come along so it could kill them. He should know that guns are only objects to be used by responsible people in a responsible manner.

He should be faulting the crazy guy who planned the murders, not the object he used to commit the murders. The latter could have been swords, ropes, knives, pencils, arrows, even rocks. The list is endless.

He should be calling for more debate on mental illness and its causes, detection, diagnosis, and cure; not the objects crazies use to fulfil their evil desires.

Put up a sign that says “Gun Free Zone.” That should work.

There is precedent. We used to have a terrible drug plague in this country. Then we passed laws against drugs. Now that problem is gone.

We need to take instruction from the War on Drugs, because it has been so successful at eliminating the drug scourge and disempowering the drug cartels.

I read even his family members knew he was a danger, but did nothing. This is what happens when spoiled rich kids have everything given to them without earning it.

“And nothing about the real problem: the mentally ill.”

Correct, and this guy was SO nuts that his own parents called the cops on him.

Clearly that was ineffectual (why, I don’t understand but so it was), but my guess is that was not the only thing they had done to try and get him help.

I know from personal experience that is it pretty much impossible to get help for a mentally ill person. Psychiatrists, etc. spend their days helping the neurotic while the psychotic are pretty much left to fend for themselves.

In the 2 cases I’m personally familiar with, involving a family member and a close friend, many, many caring family members sought fruitlessly to get help for people who had lost touch with reality.

The end result in both cases was suicide.

I can only suppose it could have been worse.

The laws pertaining to mental illness need to be changed.

Suddenly, the parallels with the movie ‘Heathers’ stand out. Truly one of the more sarcastic movies ever made, it shows the imbecility and hypocrisy that comes out in people when their children go homicidally or suicidally bonkers, and in embarrassing ways.

The problem with the cops is that they are too careful now, because there have been too many lawsuits and even prison terms for interfering with the “rights of the mentally ill.” One of which, apparently, is to shoot at or attempt to stab cops without having any response from said cops. I guess the police are supposed to be the sacrificial lambs.

But this shouldn’t rest on them. If this guy was dysfunctional enough to be in a special residence, under the supervision of “therapists,” whatever that means, why weren’t his violent social media posts and threats enough to immediately get him put into a locked ward?

Somebody needs to clue this guy in that evil exists in the world. You cannot protect people from everything. Random violence will never be eradicated. If one of the victims had been CCW the problem would have resolved itself.
