GOLETA, Calif. (AP) A man whose son was among the victims killed in a shooting rampage near a California university quaked with grief and rage Saturday as he described his "lost and broken" family and the proliferation of guns he believes led to his son's death.
"Our son Christopher and six others are dead," Richard Martinez told reporters gathered outside a sheriff's station for a news conference the day after the shootings near the University of California, Santa Barbara, where the 20-year-old son was a sophomore. "You don't think it'll happen to your child until it does."

What does the father of the STABBING victims have to say?
I’m sorry, but it wasn’t the gun. It was the godless maniac behind the gun.
Something tells me he's recognized early on in the aftermath of this incident that he has an opportunity to cash in on the grievance industry, and he's jumping on it.
Don’t intend to be harsh but my father was killed by a sat nite special during a holdup. He was ill prepared to confront violence as were these boys.
If this dad had taught his son to carry and use a gun he would likely be alive today and his assailant dead. The solution to gun crime is to arm the victim, not the criminal.
Mr. Martinez. Your dead son doesn’t trump my 2nd Amendment rights. Sorry for your tragic loss. Very heartbreaking.
And nothing about the real problem: the mentally ill.
The three men stabbed to death by Rodgers were his roommates in a “sheltered residence” apartment for the mentally ill. Supposedly he was supervised by therapists.
His parents and the therapists asked the police to check on him because he had been posting violent things on social media. The cops determined that he was ok...based on what? Are they psychiatrists? Plus they’re terrified of being sued if they order an involuntary committal, since the “mental health advocates” have made this practically impossible and a highly risky thing for the person or agency who orders it.
He bought the guns legally. If he was so ill as to have to live in a sheltered residence, why was there nothing in his record that would have enabled the gun dealer to see it when he checked the purchase? It’s not the dealer’s fault, or because the laws on guns aren’t strict enough.
It’s because there’s a problem on how to handle the mentally ill. Blaming “guns” is a convenient excuse.
A hateful Hollywood liberal rich kid kills similar. Any surprise maybe he went to Kerry’s global warming knew he was problem and fixed it.
I feel for his loss, and detect a shout-out to gun confiscation foundations to hire him for their cause.
As sympathetic as I can be for someone who has lost their child, I would still comment that this grief has become a tool of controllers of lives who have no intention of fulfilling ordinary peoples’ dreams or desires. their success in furthering their goals will have no impact, nor would have on his life.
He would be better served condemning the filth sh!thole that Hollywood and urban California has become with its inclusion, diversity, need for government to solve all problems, and a general disrespect for the rest of the citizens in this country.
It has created untold numbers of privileged asswipes of celebrity like the Kardashians, children of entertainment and media luminaries, and all their wannabe hangers on and former celebs whose entire pastimes seem to be pursuit of excess (see, Lohan, Reid, Beiber, Cyrus, et al). And when they don’t get it, they rebel in their own childish and deluded ways.
Good info from the Daily Mail
A soon as I heard about this I immediately concluded one thing, it was NOT the action of someone who actively and sincerely follows Jesus.
My next thought was....it was either a follower of Mohammad or an Insane Fanatic...but I repeat myself.
And let’s not forget the parents who spawned an entitled, spoiled brat. Classic enabling due to fear of upsetting their Golden Boy.
The families of the stabbing victims should be offended by their loved ones exclusion. You just know the MAIGfots and mom lookin’ for some “action” are already crankin’ their rhetoric filled screeds.
The kid posted a warning. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=4fd_1400921453
I pray for the man and his family. A tragedy. As to the gun control ramblings from this man, grief is talking, not common sense.
Should have added a language alert.
A car was used to run down a victim or victims. Should we ban cars too?
Liberal logic is nonexistent.
The father is more political than rational. Watched him on TV and he sounds as crazy as the murderer doe in his rants.
So we have this guy crying for gun control and totally neglecting his role in this tragedy. He was the closest to the problem and yet did nothing but provide lip service. Typical lib.
Mr. Martinez, I am very sorry for your loss, but you are wrong about the cause. Your analogy that the gun was at fault, would be like saying that Hitler didn’t kill 6 million Jews, it was the zyklon-b pellets.
He was a spoiled brat no different from a baby, and when baby gets mad baby breaks his toys. He saw other people as his play things and when he didn’t get his way he went into a temper tantrum just like a baby. And how old is he? Oh that’s right, 22....So in other words he’s an adult yet had the mentality of a baby and of course there were no signs of this. My ASS.
The guy has an agenda. Eliminate or control your rights to own and use guns.
The gun was not laying there, planning for someone to come along so it could kill them. He should know that guns are only objects to be used by responsible people in a responsible manner.
He should be faulting the crazy guy who planned the murders, not the object he used to commit the murders. The latter could have been swords, ropes, knives, pencils, arrows, even rocks. The list is endless.
He should be calling for more debate on mental illness and its causes, detection, diagnosis, and cure; not the objects crazies use to fulfil their evil desires.
Put up a sign that says “Gun Free Zone.” That should work.
We need to take instruction from the War on Drugs, because it has been so successful at eliminating the drug scourge and disempowering the drug cartels.
The maniac used his car to hit people too.
I read even his family members knew he was a danger, but did nothing. This is what happens when spoiled rich kids have everything given to them without earning it.
“And nothing about the real problem: the mentally ill.”
Correct, and this guy was SO nuts that his own parents called the cops on him.
Clearly that was ineffectual (why, I don’t understand but so it was), but my guess is that was not the only thing they had done to try and get him help.
I know from personal experience that is it pretty much impossible to get help for a mentally ill person. Psychiatrists, etc. spend their days helping the neurotic while the psychotic are pretty much left to fend for themselves.
In the 2 cases I’m personally familiar with, involving a family member and a close friend, many, many caring family members sought fruitlessly to get help for people who had lost touch with reality.
The end result in both cases was suicide.
I can only suppose it could have been worse.
The laws pertaining to mental illness need to be changed.
Suddenly, the parallels with the movie ‘Heathers’ stand out. Truly one of the more sarcastic movies ever made, it shows the imbecility and hypocrisy that comes out in people when their children go homicidally or suicidally bonkers, and in embarrassing ways.
Killing people is already illegal.
He was the evil sociopathic spawn of godless socialist Hollywood.
Anyone figure heritage? Initially thought gay and/or muslim
The problem with the cops is that they are too careful now, because there have been too many lawsuits and even prison terms for interfering with the “rights of the mentally ill.” One of which, apparently, is to shoot at or attempt to stab cops without having any response from said cops. I guess the police are supposed to be the sacrificial lambs.
But this shouldn’t rest on them. If this guy was dysfunctional enough to be in a special residence, under the supervision of “therapists,” whatever that means, why weren’t his violent social media posts and threats enough to immediately get him put into a locked ward?
Somebody needs to clue this guy in that evil exists in the world. You cannot protect people from everything. Random violence will never be eradicated. If one of the victims had been CCW the problem would have resolved itself.
Yeah, he has to blame someone or something. So sad.
Swim back across the Rio Grande to Messyco where gun laws are more to your liking, a**hole. Our 2nd Amendment rights are set in stone. If you don’t like it, leave.
Just another liberal POS exploiting a tragedy to attack our constitutional rights. Hey, I got the hershey squirts once after eating a burrito in Mexico. Maybe I should start advocating tearfully that Messycans adopt an American diet. A**holes.
I wonder if the father or his Doc knew he had guns?
If you had a 22 year old son within 100 miles that was threatening himself and others wouldn’t you go and confront him? This father had the means to get him at least temporarily committed. Then he could have searched his place and taken his car etc.
He was actually crazy, so dysfunctional he had to be in a special residence. His parents obviously paid for his “therapy.” I don’t know if this was a private residence or if he had gotten into the state mental health system at that point.
In any case, there is a problem here, which people on this forum are ignoring: he bought these guns legally. In other words, the gun dealer - who would always check the records - saw nothing that indicated he could not sell these guns to this lunatic. And like many people with that type of illness (supposedly a form of autism), Rodgers was obviously fine when he knew he needed to keep it together, as when he was talking to the police. So the gun dealer is not at fault.
The problem is the way we deal with the mentally ill. They can only be committed after the bodies are lying on the ground, and mental health treatment, even for seriously violent disorders, is never indicated so the gun dealers never can get a real idea of the person to whom they’re selling the weapon. This all comes out of the 1970s idea that mental illness was the result of capitalism, and only the mad were truly sane and thus should not be institutionalized...well, you get the general drift.
But unfortunately, it has resulted not only in millions of “homeless” (aka, mentally ill) filling our streets, but mass killings everywhere. And that’s the problem. The mentally ill can kill with anything because they’re very determined - because they’re crazy.
Mr. GG2 just commented that if it was his kid he would have gone over there and taken the guns away from him and had a real life talk about serious psychiastric counseling.
Did anybody see any tears in his eyes?
You should see his Facebook page, the guy was completely self absorbed, just filled with one photo after another of himself. You have to have a Facebook account though to see it.....
Yeah, I’m not so sure about that special residence thing. This is the only place I’ve heard that and I skimmed that long daily mail piece and I don’t think it said anything about that.
There was a picture of the building and it looked like an ordinary apartment building.
I’m not saying it’s not true, but as of now I have to class it as unverified.
I too wonder why the videos, etc. were not sufficient. I can understand why the cops would feel they had no grounds to arrest him, but it seems you might take it before a judge and try and get some order for confinement or something.
But, as we are saying, it really is almost impossible to get any legal or medical help for crazy people.
Remember Billie Boggs? She was a crazy, homeless woman living in NYC. I remember seeing her tearful sister and brother in law on TV lamenting that they were unable to get any help to help their sister. Why this actually became a news story I don’t remember. But it was pathetic. The woman’s sister was pretty much living like an animal, she wanted to help her, and society said: no, you can’t help her, she, you and we all must continue to suffer.
Why, because a person who is demonstrably insane thinks it’s OK? Who really are the crazy people in this?
