6 killed, seven wounded in Mass Public Shooting in Santa Barbara, a giant gun-free zone

UPDATE: As usual, the media news stories got fundamental facts wrong here. Of particular interest, half the people killed here were stabbed to death. Also, you won’t hear this in the news, the magazines that the killer used were also apparently limited to holding no more than 10 rounds (note that the Sheriff said that all the magazines were legal under California law). Obviously neither point fits the gun control check list. My guess is that because of these points the news media interest in this story will be relatively short lived.

UPDATE: The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s office had interviewed the killer before the attack after a report that he might be a danger to himself. In the press conference by the Sheriff’s office, it was described how officers interviewed the killer and did not believe him to be a danger. The point here is again how incredibly difficult it is to identify these mass killers in advance. It is so much easier to identify these problems after the fact. . . .

Original post: Santa Barbara County, where the attack occurred, is essentially a gun-free zone. As of February 2014, there were only 53 individuals with a concealed handgun permit in Santa Barbara County. With an adult population of 337,000, that is a rate of just 0.016 percent. The few people allowed to carry are undoubtedly politically well connected individuals who were unlikely to have been in the part of town where this attack occurred. As we have seen over and over again, these multiple victim killers deliberately select locations where victims are unlikely to be able to defend themselves. . . .

Its not about gun control but personal responsibility and duty. If this deranged kid’s father instead of being a whining, Hollywood metrosexual and had been a real man, this tragedy may have been avoided. A real man and father would have marched in his disturbed son’s apartment, confiscated the guns and stopped the funding that made the BMW and drugs possible. This wimp failed to exercise his parental responsible. Now he wants to blame inanimate objects. No wonder the country is beginning to rot.

Up until a few decades ago “gun free” zones would have been interpreted to mean that someone was handing out army surplus rifles.

It is so much easier to identify these problems after the fact.

That's because that's the role of the police. They do not exist to prevent crime, their role is to chalk off the bodies, take statements, and cordon off the crime scene for the investigators. Its called crime and punishment and the crime must first occur for the police to act.

This is why citizens have an obligation to protect themselves from crime. They are the only one who can do so. Expecting the police to do it is folly.

Yes a giant gun free zone. Just goes to show you he was crazy but not stupid. I guess he picked the most defenseless prey he could find and hoped the victims weren’t armed and able to defend themselves.

Still, I’m glad I live in Texas. Maybe there are few who have not seen this:

I know humor is not appropriate at this time, but we must learn that our first line of defence is ourselves. The consequences of entering a gun free zone is to be defenseless and at the mercy of someone else.

I place some blame on the ACLU. They have pushed forth an agenda that allows mentally ill people to roam free. The shooter in Connecticut is a prime example. His mom was trying to get him committed, but she hadn’t been able to jump through ALL the hoops before he had his rampage. I have no fear that Obama’s impending Police State will make it a lot easier for ‘Officials’ to commit anyone they want. Especially those whose political leanings don’t agree with the State.

Our argument is that the incidence of such crimes in gun free zones like Santa Barbara and Sandy Hook is proof of the ineffectiveness of gun control. Their argument is that gun control will work once all guns are removed from all people excepting the government who will thereby protect the public while they go about their utopian lives.

The impossibility of removing all guns and the ineffectiveness of this approach as demonstrated the deaths of three of the victims by means of a knife punches very gaping holes in their argument. Their plan can only succeed if the entire population is segregated into separate enclosures and only allowed to interact with anyone outside their enclosure at feeding times.

I don’t know much about this story, but I have no doubt that the shooter was taking some form of seratonin-uptake re-inhibitor. This seems to be the common thread linking every mass shooting in recent memory.

The dad thinks everyone in the country should give up their ability to protect themselves so he doesn't have to deal with his son's obvious problems..

This liberal elite father taught his son to blame others - to NOT take responsibility. That seems to be a large part of the problem... Daddy's staying true to form - he's blaming the NRA... he's blaming conservatives. Shame on him. Shame on him.

There has NOT BEEN ONE mass murderer who was the son of an NRA member. NOT ONE. NOT EVER. Look inward daddy... look inward.

Don’t count on it, facts don’t matter to minitrue, they can just make up their own to fit the agenda.

"Special little snowflake..."

He was bat**** crazy. He was clearly a danger to himself and others since he killed himself, murdered 6 other people and injured several more. Res ipsa loquitur, he should have been institutionalized so that he couldn't harm himself or others. How did or could the police and his (late) roommates not have noticed this? And if they did, why couldn't anything be done about it? (Rhetorical question -- we know the answer.)

Only three of the six deceased were shot to death. Three were stabbed to death.

Given that only two out of six victims died of gunshot wounds, it’s hard to call it merely a “mass public shooting.”

Did any of the victims had a chance to shoot back, just to make it fair?

Why is the SAnta Barbara killing spree so diminutive on television news? If this was anywhere in the south it would be wall to wall, constant coverage. But it is Santa Barbara, California, gun-free zone. Who has decided that Connecticut, Aurora, Colorado, Virginia, and the rest deserved wall to wall coverage, but not California. Just saying…….

Another day, another murder in a "gun-free" zone. I have sympathy for the families of those murdered, but more ANGER and REGRET of these IDIOTIC policies that led them to be murdered by a MADMAN to start with. Disarm the victims, and nutjobs will always have a target-rich environment.

Gun grabbers can (and probably will) go to hell; I will not give up my guns, nor comply with any registration or confiscation schemes. I know where I am going after death, so I say, COME AND TAKE THEM.
