~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Gordon, Georgia

Fort Gordon, formerly known as Camp Gordon, is a United States Army installation established in 1917. It is the current home of the United States Army Signal Corps and Signal Center and was once the home of "The Provost Marshal General School" (Military Police). The fort is located in Richmond, Jefferson, McDuffie, and Columbia counties, Georgia.

Fort Gordon is a large, multi mission, multi-service military installation providing base services and support accross a wide spectrum of training, operational and Soldier sustainment needs.

The installation supports Army and Department of Defense organizations and activities performing regional and world-wide missions including communications training and operations, military intelligence, cyber operations, medical and dental care, force integration and mobilization.

Fort Gordon's technical name is the U.S. Army Signal Center & Fort Gordon, or USASCFG. While the TRADOC school itself is the primary function, the post is home to the following active-duty tenant units:

15th Regimental Signal Brigade, home to the 73d Ordnance (TRADOC), 369th Signal (TRADOC), 447th Signal (TRADOC) and 551st Signal Battalions.

35th Signal Brigade, home to the 63d Expeditionary Signal Battalion, 67th and 50th Signal Battalion. 50th Signal Battalion is current on detached duty to Fort Bragg, NC (formerly the 93rd Signal Brigade)

513th Military Intelligence Brigade, home to Task Force Lightning and the 202nd and 297th MI Battalions
35th Military Police Detachment
706th Military Intelligence Group, home of the 707th MI Battalion

The post also hosts a joint-service command, National Security Agency/Central Security Service Georgia, formerly known as the Gordon Regional Security Operations Center. It is a SIGINT collection center for a geographic area including the Middle East.

The Army's 706th MI Group works there alongside units from the Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency, Naval Network Warfare Command (Navy Information Operations Command, Georgia, Marine Corps Intelligence Activity as well as civilians from the National Security Agency (NSA).

Considered a mission partner on Fort Gordon is the Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center (DDEAMC), home of the Southeast Regional Medical Command (SERMC) as well as a dental laboratory. The facility treats active duty military and their families, as well as many of the military retiree community in the Central Savannah River Area. Under SERMC, the hospital is responsible for military hospital care from Kentucky to Puerto Rico.

The only time I was ever at Fort Gordon was in 1970.
We trained on assaulting a full scale viet-namese village.
Completely authentic, other than for the pine tress.

Not feeling well today. Put a call in to my Dr. - she came in expressly to see me - put me on Cefdenir.

Needless to say, I am most impressed and grateful that she would do so. She could have just told me to go to the ER. The ER is not a place that is hospitable to me - with my COPD, anytime I show up there they want to keep me.

God rest his father’s soul.

We thank him for his service.

The little boy looks like he might be wearing a tiny Marine uniform.

He is indeed wearing a Marine uniform. From the article, it appears that his father died from a non-combat injury. The article was pretty skimpy on details - it didn't give the boy's name, although it gave the name of his father.

To me, this laying of flowers at ANC was of far greater moment than the ceremony that took place at the Tomb Of The Unknowns today. This was a sincere tribute - this child truly mourned the loss of his father. I'll prescind from comment on the other.

May our Heavenly Father gather our Valiant Fallen in His Healing Embrace for ever and ever!

Lord, I was born a ramblin’ man,
Tryin’ to make a livin’ and doin’ the best I can.
And when it’s time for leavin’,
I hope you’ll understand,
That I was born a ramblin’ man.

My father was a gambler down in Georgia,
And he wound up on the wrong end of a gun.
And I was born in the back seat of a Greyhound bus
Rollin’ down highway 41.

Good even’, Kathy ...((HUGS))... Liked it but the troops had some nasty manes for it.

I look like, I was in a Saber Duel with a Prussian Baron and lost.

Feel good though.

Hope the new meds work, and swiftly.

Ah, yes...Ft. Gordon. I was there for a brief time in 1983 while I did my AIT as a 05B-Radio Operator. It was nice while I was down there, and I left there just as the Masters was beginning. (I remember being at the airport in Augusta and seeing Arnold Palmer’s private jet.)

Only went into downtown Augusta ONE time...and once was enough.
