Nick and Rachel Robinson were excited about the possibilities that Obamacare offered them when they found out they were expecting a third child.
Its one of those times where you hear the news and theres this immediate sense of joy and excitement like, Yay, a new kid. Thats awesome! Nick Robinson told NPR. But the happy news also came with a new set of worries. What are we going to do? How are we going to pay for this? This is intense.
When the option of the Affordable Care Act became available, the Robinsons believed it was the answer to what they were looking for. Nicks company didnt offer health benefits and neither did Rachels position as a wedding photographer.
I was like, Oh, heres the answer! This is simple! he told NPR. Its a cheaper insurance plan, theres no pre-existing condition stuff.
But the Robinsons soon learned the HMO Blue Cross Blue Shield plan they pay about $375 each month for wasnt quite what they expected.
For example, when it came to finding an obstetrician in Texas for their upcoming baby earlier this year, Rachel said she called all 28 practices listed as acceptable options for their plan, but could find none to take her as a patient.
Some would just come right out and say, We dont take Obamacare, she said. Or the best one was, The doctor takes it here at the actual practice, but whatever hospital you use does not take that insurance.
NPR noted that there were practices that accepted HMO plans, but the doctors rotated and Rachel wanted a relationship with only one physician.

Harry Reid says this family is lying.
I”m not real happy that folks dumb enough to think Obama Care was a good idea are reproducing.
Yet another case of someone who was greedy or stupid (or both) thinking that he and his family could get "free", premium healthcare paid for by "the rich," and now waking up to the reality of government healthcare.
Dropped their Obamacare plan? They'd better keep an eye on their checkbook, or whatever they used to make the monthly payments. Welcome to the Hotel California, Rachel!
It’s sad that good people are getting screwed. But it’s funny as hell that the liberals who wanted this and still love obama are getting screwed.
Ha! Ha! These morons probably thought 'Barry' was "the one"!
Another 0bama 'success' story - brings tears to my eyes and a big volume of gas to my innerds!
Give it a little time. Obammy will fix that with another EO.
What a lot of folks are coming to grips with is that if you really want the perks of being rich, you have to actually be rich.
We are in for such a time of forced austerity in this country it’s not even a little bit funny. My wife and I are growing a large garden (roughly 40x80) and have learned something very interesting: It’s a LOT OF WORK. So is heating your home with wood.
But I think a LOT of folks are going to be coming to grips with the idea that to enjoy a lot of the stuff they take for granted (like a warm home in winter) they are going to have a lot less free time.
Well, beggars can’t be choosers. If their plan only has rotating doctors, then that’s what she will have. Obummer’’s “change” again.
” but the doctors rotated and Rachel wanted a relationship with only one physician.”
Well, you don’t get to decide, sweetie. The government tells you what you can have now.
Given their frustrations with finding a doctor who would accept Obamacare insurance, the Robinsons dropped their plan and decided to pay $4,000 for a midwife and a home delivery instead .....
Let’s see ... $375/month x 12 = $4,500 .... $500 more in just premium cost than the cost of the midwife/home delivery .... wonder what their deductibles were?
How many “Obamacare” signups have done the same thing when they find out insurance isn’t the same as medical access/care? I’m sure it’s a whole lot more than being reported.
In some ways they are lying. They did find a practice that would take them but the practice rotated physicians and the mom would be subject to whoever was working and not able to rely on one provider.
This is the essence of socialized medicine, sometimes you get Dr Wonderful and sometimes you get Dr Awful. So they found a midwife and used a healthcare cost sharing plan. Which got them to assume more risk for their baby’s birth, as well as the costs.
You are not going to be allowed to do that.
Were so happy with where we are now, but this is not OK. And Im extremely confident that, thats not what the architects of this plan had in mind, Nick told NPR.
I wonder if their child will be stupid too!?!
More like the Roach Motel! lol
My idiot brother in law thought it was going to be great, also. That is until he found out it would be $750.00 per month with a $13,000.00 deductible.
It’s all so predictable!
Only idiot Liberals could let themselves be diddled like this.
They’re SO gullible, I’m sure they don’t even know that the worst is yet to come!!!!!
A $13K deductible??? Whoa! With $9K per year premiums that’s $22K out of pocket before the insurance pays a dime. (not counting any co-pays) Insane!
If they raise it, yes. Hopefully they could drop it off with a travelling band of gypsies
That would be the compassionate thing for a liberal to do. :-)
I pay about $1200 a month now (self employed, family of five), and the $13k deductible. When I hear people say “insane” (like you), I’m wondering what you do for insurance? But I figure most folks have a job where “the Man” is paying, so the costs are hidden. But the costs are still there - and someone (all of us?) will pay, in the end.
Eh - reminds me of working for a small company where I wasn’t getting paid much as we were getting it started. The boss said “Don’t worry - you’ll get your reward in the end.”
“That’s okay - I’m getting it in the end already!”
Oh, I know the song. Just seems to me that 0bamaCare is more likely to kill you than keep you prisoner in a bad dream.
No, the answer is to pay for your own medical expenses instead of looking for a free ride off everyone else. I paid for two kids out of pocket without insurance. I never dreamed of forcing someone else to pay for it.
They are ENTITLED....entitled to a specific physician because they finally paid their money.
The people below decks can rotate doctors.
” Maybe I’m dating myself.”
Hey, do that in private.
If you could go 15 or 20 years without touching it you would have some real serious money.
That's very inexpensive insurance. Unless they're in a rural county there were probably non-HMO options. Or the private market. But no, that wouldn't be $375 a month, taxpayers wouldn't be footing part of the bill. I'm confident it's exactly what the architects of the plan had in mind.
“...And Im extremely confident that, thats not what the architects of this plan had in mind, Nick told NPR.”
Yep, some dirty bastids messed up the Big Plan!
The free market is the best solution, but even Republicans now seem more inclined to tweak Obamacare rather than unravel the market distortions created by government meddling in the first place.
For example, all I want is catastrophic coverage. Give me a really low premium and cover me so that I’m not wiped out by a health emergency. Let me pay cash for everything else—preventive care, routine visits, etc. Ah! We can’t allow that, because Ms. Julia wants government (essentially other taxpayers) to cover everything, even her birth control, AND she wants it free, too.
has anyone told Nick and Rachel Robinson that this all due to the very cold winter and things will get better?
“...he found out it would be $750.00 per month with a $13,000.00 deductible.”
Ye-oww! Just think what that kind of money still buys today. That would finance a very nice car, easily feed a family of four, or pay a big chunk of a mortgage payment.
Oh, yeah! Those evil Rethuglicans who didn’t vote for it did it. lol
“If they raise it, yes. Hopefully they could drop it off with a travelling band of gypsies.”
Or just a pack of wolves? Anything would be better than the dumb as mud parents.
What? Government price capping and heavy handed regulations leading to shortages? Gee wally, who woulda thunk it....
“”””And what does he say now? Does he still luv Obama?”””
Not quite as much for some reason.
I doubt it.
So it’s the doctors and the hostpitals fault. Not the crappy, over-expensive comie-care. Nope.
Some people never learn.
You don’t get a dedicated doctor in ANY HMO.. beyond at best a PCP who at the end of the day acts as the gatekeeper for any other health care.... have to ask their permission to see anyone besides them in most HMOs.
I hear you. It’s beyond belief.
My neighbor too. Big Obama donor, etc. Couldn’t wait to sign up.
Daughter as hurt in a softball game, hit in the face and had to have MRI, X-ray and a few hours of observation - that’s when he looked at the fine print on his “new” insurance policy and found out HIS deductible was something like $7,000.
He got a straight up bill for $2,500 that he’s expected to pay right now. Had to cancel his summer vacation and all.
Luckily, the kid was OK and only had a few bruises for about a week.
