Family of Purcellville [Va] teen killed by police demands answers
WTTG FOX 5 DC ^ | May 26, 2014 | Sherri Ly

PURCELLVILLE, Va. -
The family of a Purcellville teen killed by police want answers. They believe he didn't have to die. Police were called for help Saturday afternoon because 17-year-old Christian Sierra was suicidal. Instead, an officer shot him dead.

His parents say he was crying out for help and that police were too quick to shoot and kill.

His family said Christian was depressed, but not violent. He was at a friend's house and became suicidal. So they called 911 for help.

When Purcellville police arrived, he was armed with a knife. According to a witness, Christian came around the corner followed by a friend begging him to drop the knife. He had already harmed himself.

The witness heard him say, "I don't want to live anymore." Christian collapsed on the ground and then got up and turned toward police. That's when he was shot.

"The four gunshots, it's just too much. Excessive. Excessive. Why four?" asked Christian's mother.

Police say Christian lunged at the officer with the knife. Virginia State Police are investigating.

What continues to gnaw at the family is whether officers could have handled this differently. Was the officer who fired properly trained for someone who is suicidal? Did he have a Taser that could have been used instead? What was the role of the other officers on the scene? The family can't understand how this could have happened.

"They're supposed to come to help and stop the suicide and they came and killed him," said Natalie Moriarty, Christian's aunt.

About the only thing the cops care about is making sure that they go home at night.

And so it goes. Another day another civilian gunned down by those who are supposed to “serve and protect”.

Well, he IS over being suicidal. And, the cop went home unharmed. I’m not seeing the problem. He was a CIVILIAN! Thus, of no importance. He will vote Democrat, tho.

If I were a bit more cynical I’d point out that they did stop the suicide. Just not quite in the way they wanted.

Bad cop, no donut.

Wow. This kid needs help, and instead he gets four rounds. This seems very amateurish by the police.

RIP Christian.

Moral of the story: if your loved one is suicidal, don’t call the police.

It’s well documented that your loved one will almost certainly be shot in such cases.

“The cops aren’t trained to say, “Aww, you’re suicidal?...you get one free shot.””

They don’t seem to be trained to do anything but piss their pants at the slightest hint of danger. And that assumes the claim of ‘he lunged’ is honest. It wouldn’t exactly be the first time a cop made that lie.

" I don’t blame the cops. Unless the spaces in that house were like Downton Abbey, there was no time for any fancy moves. It was shoot or be stabbed. "

The cops should have evacuated the house of everyone, surrounded it, but kept their distance until they could get someone to talk to the kid. Or, use a taser...

Cops love a good adrenalin rush. They get overhyped on steroids, caffeine, and adrenalin and they don't think through the situation to deescalate before acting. E.G. They sprayed over 300 rounds throughout the neighborhood at the Boston bombers and made just a couple grazing hits (the older brother was killed by the younger running him over).

Sure as hell doesn’t make any sense. They could have just let the kid kill himself and saved a bullet. Oh, how I hate cops.

Can someone tell me how to get a nationwide organization started with chapters in ever city to go talk to police chiefs and mayors about all the dog and people killing. Maybe we could get people to volunteer to monitor police radio and show up at the scene as witnesses.

No way I would bet my life on the reliability of a Taser. A friend of mine tried that with a mentally ill man and got hit over the head with a hammer. Skull fracture and a hundred staples and stitches. The backup officers shot the man as he went to swing again.

The locals in my area have had way better luck with less than lethal shotgun rounds. Way more separation and safety for all involved. The limiting factor is that you need enough officer on the scene to set up that kind of employment.

Isn’t that convenient. So the cops now act in total secrecy. I would think that could be changed. But, there are just as many power hungry corrupt judges as there are cops.

There should be cameras from every angle on every cop and on every cop car. They’ve got cameras all over the place so why not make them work FOR us instead of against us. There needs to be a law that every camera “movie” is available to the public at the end of each shift. I guarantee you that if you do something wrong the cops will have it on tape or whatever the hell digital thing they’re “on” today.

Unfortunately, the people in office today are so damned naive they don’t know what computers can do. I saw Mike Rogers say that Snowden is saying they’re doing things that computers aren’t capable of doing. With people like that pulling for us, we’re screwed.

Remember this? Back when the police cared about human life? Sniper shoots gun out of suicidal man?

Maybe all the shoot to kill incidents are due to limited budgets and not wanting to pay overtime for talking the poor bastard down. Internal reviews justify the shoot and the cop gets a paid vacation.

Just sayin.

I can’t understand why, if he was suicidal, he was at a friend’s house, instead of home or with a counsellor, or institutionalized until he could be helped past his depression/suicidal tendencies. Wasn’t it somewhat irresponsible of his parents to let him go off to a friend’s house instead of getting professional help?

My apologies. I did not mean to give the impression you did not want to get the suicidal person help. They should get it.

I fully agree about the police, though. Police, I am sad to say, have become a group that seemingly only understands force, and once that is unleashed, there is no guarantee where that force will be used, or upon who.

It was not always so, and I have seen a LEO risk serious injury to defuse a situation when they could have simply killed the person at little or no risk to themselves, but that was a while back, and the new crop does not seem to understand the Andy in Mayberry approach. Then, too, many of the people the police deal with have changed, too.

In general, the fewer the number of official agencies involved, usually the less complex it is to resolve a problem.

It isn't frequency hopping. A lot of jurisdictions have switched to trunking systems, which is like one of those walkie talkie cell phones. Every time you push the talk button the system grants you a frequency and you talk. The computer portion of the system looks for other users and then broadcasts your traffic to them. What that appears to a person using a scanner is lots of conversations happening simultaneously. You could hear traffic from a stop mixed in with traffic related to where two guys want to meet for lunch.

Very few municipalities use any kind of encryption. I am fairly certain that Loudon County is on an 800 MHz trucked system, but have no direct knowledge of that.

Feds should all be operating encrypted.

That brings up an interesting thought. Someone should start tracking such quick-use-of-lethal-force events, similar to how DaveLoneRanger and others used to track self defense acts that involved using a firearm.

As you say, there are a lot of them.

Part of the issue may be that due to liability, cops no longer equip and train with 1 yard long riot batons. You could keep some distance with an unarmed violent subject using one, and cops might not feel the need to immediately resort to gunfire.
