As Texas Republicans, we have the opportunity to set the tone for the rest of the nation. Let's not pick sides, let's pick what is right for Texas and right for America, without compromising conservative principles in the process.
Washington continues to be paralyzed and unable to find the right fix to secure our southern border and reform a failed immigration system. Maintaining the “status quo” only plays into the hands of President Obama, allowing him to pick and choose which laws he wants to enforce.
Saying “secure our border” is certainly the right approach and as conservatives, we know that reforming the existing broken immigration system that makes a mockery of our border security is an essential element. Why? Because our current laws make it easier for a business to hire a worker illegally present in our nation than it does a legally documented guest worker. This is wrong and why an “enforcing our current laws only” approach is inadequate to fix the bigger problem.

I repeat we must separate legal work status from citizenship. Those individuals who want more than a job should be required to seek U.S. citizenship by applying from their home country.
Anyone know what exactly Staples is suggesting?
Is he suggesting that without citizenship, there are no other benefits? No Medicaid, no EITC, no welfare or subsidies of any kind? What about public school education for their kids?
If there is a guest worker visa, how do we limit it to jobs that can't be filled with a US citizen? The H1B visa program is supposed to be only for jobs they can't fill otherwise, but it's a joke: they set the salary so low that any citizen with a college education and any experience won't accept it.
But if we could somehow solve that problem, how about this: no Social Security or Medicare taxes for "guest workers". But, that means no future benefits, either. They only pay federal income taxes (and whatever a state charges), with no deductions or exemptions. So, that's 10% on the first $9K/year, and 15% on the next $27K, etc.
There are enough "freebies" for the asking from various state and local agencies to make even the poorest life in the US better than staying in a third-world country. They'll find some way to get into the US, unless we build something like the Berlin Wall. But, without the "freebies" for anyone that can make it over the border, we don't need a fence -- they have no reason to come here unless they can make a productive contribution. We have to get rid of the freebies, or we'll never be able to stem the flow of people across the border.
(Yes, there is the "anchor baby" issue, but that would require either a Supreme Court decision reinterpreting the 14th Amendment, or a new Amendment)
How about hiring more Americans for real jobs?

Both parties have been sending American jobs to other countries, for now an entire generation.
Bring them back.
We had the ‘bracero’ program to bring in farm workers. Worked fine. Problem is that illegals have come over, decimated the building trades by putting US workers out of a job. Now, the Chamber of Commerce wants to bring in more workers to replace US workers.
