In New Kent, Brat backers hope to hold Cantor accountable

QUINTON, Va. — The closest people in New Kent County come these days to seeing their congressman, Eric Cantor, is his sagging 4-by-6 campaign sign on the south side of U.S. 60, just beyond a filling station. There’s been a wave of mail. And the television ads, including one depicting his primary opponent, Dave Brat, as an out-of-touch, ivory-tower liberal who is wobbly on higher taxes.

That commercial, loudly branded by Brat as a fabrication, might not be having the intended effect for Cantor, the No. 2 Republican in the U.S. House.

The ad is supposed to turn voters against Brat, an economics professor and a badly outspent longest of long shots. Instead, it’s turning out voters for him, mostly tea partyers and libertarians who’s thinking is ABC: anybody but Cantor.

“He was a lot more in touch when he first ran 14 years ago,” Scott McPhail, the assistant manager of a local drugstore, said of Cantor. “It’s worth a few minutes of my time to put a scare in Eric Cantor; so maybe he will listen to his constituents and their concerns.”

Voters like McPhail are demanding of Cantor what he has largely escaped since he was first elected in 2000: accountability.

Two years ago, Cantor crushed a primary challenger before easily dispatching a Democrat in the general election. This go-around, the primary will decide the seat. Democrats don’t have a candidate, though some talk of voting in the open-to-all primary on June 10 in the faint hope of defeating Cantor.

Beyond incumbency, Cantor’s insurance policy is a gerrymandered district. Virginia’s 7th District is drawn to favor the GOP. It delivers about 60 percent for a candidate with an R after his name.

After the anti incumbent losses in the GOP for Cantor type pro Amnesty GOPe yesterday, I hope Cantor goes down to send a message or two about who the GOP is and what they want.

HERE'S THE KEY TO DEFEATING CANTOR (TAKEN FROM THE ARTICLE.)

Democrats don’t have a candidate, though some talk of voting in the open-to-all primary on June 10 in the faint hope of defeating Cantor.

Democrats have no problem doing this. They've done it to us in General Elections for years. Come on Virginians; get those Democrats to the polls to vote for Brat and against Cantor.
