In one of his blander pronouncements during the papal visit, Netanyahu mentioned on Monday that Jesus spoke Hebrew. There was nothing incorrect about Netanyahus statement. Jesus was after all, an Israeli Jew.
But Francis couldnt take the truth. So he indelicately interrupted his host, interjecting, Aramaic.
Netanyahu was probably flustered. True, at the time, educated Jews spoke and wrote in Aramaic. And Jesus was educated. But the language of the people was Hebrew. And Jesus preached to the people, in Hebrew.
Netanyahu responded, He spoke Aramaic, but he knew Hebrew.
Reuters write-up of the incident tried to explain away the popes rudeness and historical revisionism, asserting, Modern-day discourse about Jesus is complicated and often political. The report went on to delicately mention, Palestinians sometimes describe Jesus as a Palestinian. Israelis object to that.

Goodness. I usually agree with what Caroline B. Glick has to say.
But this article is atrocious. What does she expect? That the Pope should be rude to the Palestinians he meets in Israel?
Most historians agree that Jesus spoke Aramaic like other Jews of his time, but of course He was also familiar with Hebrew, and spoke that when it was appropriate.
There was no argument, no insult, and no big deal.
I don’t know why on earth Glick thinks it will be helpful to Israel and the Jews to try to make trouble between them and the Catholic Church.
I searched on the title and didn’t get a hit but I see it has been posted. I asked the mods to remove.
Jesus unquestionably spoke Aramaic on a daily basis. He is quoted twice in the Gospels speaking in his native language ("Talitha koumi" and "Eloi, eloi, lama sabacthani") -- both quotations are Aramaic. Acts refers to the place of Judas' suicide as named in the language of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, "Akeldama". This is the Greek transliteration of Aramaic; the corresponding Hebrew would be "Sh'deh Hadam".
Many persons in the Gospel account have names beginning with "Bar". That's Aramaic for "son of"; the corresponding Hebrew is "Ben".
Jesus also no doubt could speak and especially read Hebrew, since Hebrew was used by the Jews in a sacral context.
And he almost certainly knew some Greek, because that was the lingua franca of the eastern part of the Roman empire, and would have been the language of almost all of the Gentiles he met.
(One of the oddities of Passion of the Christ is that nobody spoke Greek. That's, IMO, historically wrong.)
This Pope is as anti-Semitic as many of his predecessors. He is also a socialist and willing to turn the usual blind eye to abuses of Jews.
He also seems to be both a Liberation Theologist, ala South American commie priests. And, he seems a Replacement Theology advocate.
Hardly what a Church reeling from “Purple Priests” needs.
I mean after all - it was the Jews and specifically Yashua that gave Christianity to the world.
If it’s so silly why did Francis feel compelled to interrupt the Prime Minster to correct him.
Just pure rudeness.
