Pope Francis Says He Might Retire
Daily Beast ^ | 05/28/2014 | Barbie Latza Nadeau 

In little-noticed remarks aboard the papal plane this week, the pontiff said he wouldn’t rule out following Pope Benedict XVI’s path.

Pope Francis gave a candid midair press briefing to reporters traveling from back from the Middle East to Rome during which he talked about sex, money, and satanic Mass—and retirement.

After a grueling but ultimately successful three-day visit to one of the most complicated regions on the planet, the idea of retirement probably sounded pretty good to Francis. So it is no surprise that when reporters traveling with him on the papal plane asked if he would consider resigning like his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI, he said he wouldn’t rule it out.

“I will do what the Lord tells me to do. Pray and try to follow God’s will. Benedict XVI no longer had the strength and honestly, as a man of faith, humble as he is, he took this decision,” Francis said, according to a transcript of his press conference published in La Stampa’s Vatican Insider. “Seventy years ago, popes emeritus didn’t exist. What will happen with popes emeritus? We need to look at Benedict XVI as an institution, he opened a door, that of the popes emeritus. The door is open, whether there will be others, only God knows. I believe that if a bishop of Rome feels he is losing his strength, he must ask himself the same questions Pope Benedict XVI did.”

Pope John Paul II WAS the man I most admired. He was truly a holy man, a good man who suffered at the hands of the Nazi's in Poland during WWII, along with his father, and friends. Throughout his life, he strived to do good, to be true to the Lord and his fellow man. You could see the warmth, the love in his face and his manner and in his speech. He was very special. Miss him greatly. He was the best Pope.

So can a Pope Emeritus fill the position on an interim basis if/when the present Pope dies in office?

That’s a good question. And since God’s Word is the only source for understanding how the Church is to function; we should all open the Bible to see what it says about retiring Popes.

RE Pope John Paul II:

I remember a time when a President, a Pope, and a Prime Minister teamed up to fight an Evil Empire... and won.

That kind of clarity is what is missing in this Pope.

Pope John Paul II was an amazing man, and I miss him on the same order as I miss Reagan.

For the record, I was raised RC, 12 years of Catholic schooling. I am not impressed with this current guy. Calling Muzz brothers is ridiculous.

Norm, your comment “His predecessors sent vast armies to deal with his ‘brothers the last time they decided it was open season in the Cross. This idiot embraces them.” is spot-on.

I liked the way Duke was chuckling when he said it - almost as if it was ad-libbed into the script.

Great flick!!

“Fill yer hands, you sonuvab*tch!!!!” Hahah!! Good stuff.

I was raised RC as well and did my time in the Nun’s ‘correctional system” ;)

I believe in the teachings of the RC church. I left the church when it became abundantly clear that many of the Priests, Bishops, Cardinals didn’t. And I very much question how men who cannot follow their own faith are going to lead anyone to Heaven. So I’ll do what I can and put my faith in God directly, avoiding the middle man.

I think JP2 was a very good man deserving of the praise he gets...because whether he wanted it or not, he earned it. But the deck was stacked against him in his own church. Fortunately he did great things outside of, and despite, his underlings.

This guy’s actions show what’s inside him. And it isn’t what JP2 had inside him by any stretch. Quite the opposite IMO.

I remember the same time that you're referring to. My RC background is the same as yours. Pope Francis is not right for the job. His Jesuit/liberal/leftist leanings are not what people who believe in freedom and liberty will support..he does not represent what We the People believe in. I pray he retires, the sooner the better.

“...I left the church when it became abundantly clear that many of the Priests, Bishops, Cardinals didn’t....”

Same here, brother.

“...Nun’s ‘correctional system” ...”

yes, many times I was under the wrath of Sister Helen Most Homicidal, or Sister Mary Most Murderous too... or heard the dreaded cries of “HERE COMES HERCULES!” echoing down the hall, as the the 300-pound Behemoth In Black, also known as “She of The Twitching Mustache”, approached.

They did not like me, those 3 women... not one of them.

I can still see Herk’s upper lip twitching, 5 o’clock shadow (at 2 o’clock) and all .... as she uttered the infamous words.... “YOU are a bold and brazen thing!!!”

That was NEVER good... she was deadly with the American History book... like a frisbee, I swear, she could chuck that thing... Never missed.

The media’s having ganged up on Benedict as a supposed villain in the Catholic Church’s child sex abuse scandal may also have influenced his decision to retire. I recall some senior Catholic clerics voiced suspicions of particular anti-Christian forces that may have arranged for the stories to be hyped in media after Benedict made statements they disliked, but my internet searches aren’t turning up any of the articles I’d read. Perhaps some savvy FRiend can help me here.

Miserare, perhaps you'll remember JPII kissed all gifts he was given: sombreros, soccer team jerseys, art prints, cheeses (cue: "Oh, how I love Cheeses",) various national flags, an umbrella, and even the airport tarmac. That doesn't mean he venerated them in a religious sense.

We tend to lack cultural literacy, or I might say accuracy.

Thank, Mrs. Don-o.

I truly DID “miss” that episode.

What I did NOT “miss”, however, was JPII’s fortitude in going after the ideological face of the Evil Empire and making it his life’s mission to bring it down.

I also remember when he went to Poland - then still a part of the Iron Curtain, and millions of people showed up, and some communist POS general muttered words to the effect of “there’s too many of them, we can’t kill them all...”

I also remember thinking how proud I was that I was Catholic and THIS was the man that represented us and was “going to war” against communism, with Reagan and Maggie Thatcher by his side. At least, that’s how I remember it.

To me, that outweighs ANY little obscure event such as that mentioned.

The real Pappy O'Daniel.

That is absolutely fascinating! I've been a great fan of the movie and have seen it countless times, just adoring Charles Durning's killingly clever depiction -- but was never aware just how much the Coens took from real life. It's a shame they made O'Daniel seem corrupt political hack in the movie. Thank you for posting that link!

Did you know that Charles Durning was a WWII hero?
