The National September 11 Memorial Museum has pulled its controversial commemorative cheese platter from its shelves after an outcry at the museum’s opening.
The USA-shaped platter featured hearts over New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania, where the planes crashed on 9/11. The item was first reported by Gothamist a week ago and was met with resounding criticism.

Nowhere nearly so tacky as letting Moose-limbs build a celebration mosque so close to this site . . .
This museum...I don’t know.
Ugh.
Somewhere, some bonehead or a panel of boneheads approved the cheesy and tasteless souvenir ideas.

And rebuilding at the site? NYC tacky tourist attraction. Something like a veteran's cemetary with a memorial wall or walk listing the names would've been appropriate. A modest building with the historical information would've worked. No gift shop, except maybe selling a book about 911.
This is kind of embarrassing. Sort of like DisnayWorld had a TerrorLand.

I think a mosque would be appropriate so that everyone who visits would have a chance to defile it.
Shanksville is a Muslim crescent pointing to Mecca. Ground Zero is in the shadow of a towering Mosque and most Americans are anti-Christian, anti-Jewish and anti-Constitution. And, we have no jobs.
Apologies to all for joking, though...this is a truly tacky and terrible item to be selling ANYWHERE! We're going to have a nice wooden cutting board and just chop cheese/veggies right over those little hearts?! What were they thinking?!
Agree with posters on the original site: gift shops/restaurants should be located "within walking distance" and NOT right at the memorial site. I can understand the necessity of raising funds to support the museum and the memorial, but who wants to grab a hot dog for lunch right over where thousands of people died, and some are still entombed?!
The gift shop should also focus on the LIVES of the people that were lost...they could offer "souvenirs" and "remembrances" that would be relevent (like the iconic sculpture of raising the US flag at Iwo Jima - sic - for example) and forego items like cheese boards...maybe coffee cups, vases, medallions (NOT "coasters"!), books, videos, framed pictures, flower seeds, rose bushes...THAT kind of stuff! JMHO!
The whole phrase “commemorative cheese platter” is odd!
I live in an area that lost many victims that day, and local residents consider Ground Zero to be a very somber and hallowed space. The indoor museum sounds like a tacky tourist attraction aimed at out-of-towners, which exploits the tragedy rather than memorializes it. The outdoor memorial with the waterfalls and wall of names is much more elegant and sincere.
The museum is good. Not to forget what Islam is. But a gift shop???? Wonder if they have replica candles of the burning towers.
Shucks! I was going to put some brie on New York City, a little Scrapple on the Pennsylvania crash and some olives on the Pentagon. What a delight it would have been for my...liberal guests. Another opportunity to show progressive bad taste.
How about an arcade where you you try to fly a plane into the WTC? More points for higher speed, lower visibility. (/sarc)
