U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, held for nearly five years by the Taliban, is now in U.S. custody, President Barack Obama said on Saturday.
As part of Bergdahl's release, the United States is turning over five Taliban detainees at the U.S. facility in Guantanamo, Cuba, to the custody of Qatar, U.S. officials said.
Bergdahl's freedom follows months of indirect U.S.-Taliban talks with Qatar acting as intermediary, the officials said.

Surrendering to the terrorists, this “president” should be impeached.
I thought the rule was “never negotiate w/terrorists” but I guess it happens all the time (Israel, etc.)
Exchanged for 5 GITMO prisoners.

Posted this on the other thread.
The case of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, held by the Taliban since 2009, has arisen again as the U.S. and other countries engage in diplomatic efforts to free him.
But if he is released, will Americas only prisoner of the Afghan war be viewed as a hero or a deserter?
While tattered yellow ribbons still adorn utility poles in his native Hailey, Idaho, others are expressing conflicting thoughts about Bergdahls plight as the war winds down, with President Barack Obama threatening to withdraw all U.S. troops by years end unless the Afghan government signs a crucial security agreement.
They are convinced that on June 30, 2009, just a few months after he arrived in Afghanistan, Bergdahl willingly walked away from his unit, which was deployed in Paktika province in eastern Afghanistan, adjacent to the border with Pakistan. While they do want Bergdahl home, they think he should have to answer allegations that he deserted his unit.
Lets just put politics aside for one afternoon and celebrate this young mans being free....the recriminations can wait until tomorrow. Welcome Home Bowe!
My post was not directed at you...ok.
No problem. I welcome him home.
Background and details:
This is a twofer for Obama. He helps resurrect his damaged image due to the VA scandal and he reduces the number of prisoners at Gitmo so he can close it eventually.
I thought we didn’t negotiate with Terrorists? How many weapons did Obama promise them?
On 18 October 2011 captured IDF tank gunner Gilad Shalit, captured by the Palestinian militant organization Hamas in 2006, was released in exchange for 1027 Palestinian prisoners held in Israel. The released prisoners were responsible for the deaths of 569 Israeli civilians.
Yep my bad. Got the two mixed up..
Follow them back to their hideout and then hellfire them into little pieces.
