Bowe Bergdahl, U.S. soldier held by Taliban, was "ashamed to be American," emails show

(AP) WASHINGTON - Emails an American soldier reportedly sent to his parents before he was captured by the Taliban three years ago suggest he was disillusioned and considering deserting.

Bowe Bergdahl told his parents he was "ashamed to even be American" and was disgusted with the U.S. mission in Afghanistan and with the Army, according to emails quoted in Rolling Stone magazine.

Bergdahl, a 26-year-old Army sergeant from Hailey, Idaho, was taken prisoner on June 30, 2009, in Afghanistan.

The military has never detailed circumstances of his disappearance or capture, and he is not classified as a deserter. He was initially listed as "duty status unknown" and is now considered "missing-captured." He is the only U.S. prisoner of war from the Afghanistan conflict, and U.S. officials say they are actively trying to free him.

How do you know the sky is not falling? (that is what they call a rhetorical question, no answer is required because we know the answer already)

As any honest patriot, I stand with anyone who questions the current Congress, but even as I was out the whole day yesterday, I did know that it was at first, somewhat respected members who first blew the whistle.

We all know the decision and timing had more to do with the VA scandal than anything else

I'm not sure what exactly the law requires, but since there was never a formal declaration of war in Afghanistan I'm not sure any laws would apply. I saw this because I don't know if this dude could even be legally considered a "prisoner of war" anyway.

Oh -- and that goes for the five al-Qaeda guys at Gitmo, too. The whole purpose of having them there was that they had no legal status as either criminals subject to U.S. law or prisoners of war subject to the provisions of the Geneva Convention.

Welcome to the brave new world of colonial military campaigns.

So, President Obama trades five (5) deadly Taliban commanders from Gitmo for one US-hating Islamic sympathizer so POTUS can have a photo-op and get the VA scandal off the front pages?

Yup, that is consistent for this administration.

I have done a quick search for the article you posted and have found some similar but no where as detailed and as forceful as the one you posted. Can you post a link?

If story is true about this soldier being “ashamed to be an American” then we have the answer as to why Obumbler gave up so much to get him back.

America haters are Obumblers kind of folks.

“I don’t know if this dude could even be legally considered a “prisoner of war” anyway”

Prisoner of war status is not the issue here. The question is whether he “deserted” his unit and whether he “joined” the Taliban. It appears there is a great deal of evidence to support this. In addition, Bergdahl’s father appears to be supportive of Islam. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I read that at the time of signing the law, Obama issued a “signing statement” saying essentially that he disagreed with it and did not consider it binding on him.

But Obama bragged about killing bin Laden, guess he screwed up and or lied to us that we were so triumphant if the Taliban can still kill or capture our guys.
