At the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans this week, Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson tried to distance himself from the Tea Party groups that helped elect him in 2010.
If Ron Johnson was running any faster from the Tea Party he'd leave skid marks.
Back in 2010, the Wisconsin senator was one of the Tea Party’s first candidates. His upset victory over incumbent Democrat Russ Feingold in that deep purple swing state was seen as proof that a new brand of conservatism was on the march.
But Johnson, a businessman and political novice when he was first elected, told reporters at a gathering of grassroots conservatives activists in New Orleans this week that it may be time for that march to slow down.
“I think the conservative movement may just be maturing a little bit. You can be very doctrinaire, you can demand purity, but in the end if you want to advance policy that you want enacted you have to win elections,” Johnson said when asked about a recent spate of Tea Party losses around the country.
The Wisconsin Republican blamed national and local Tea Party groups for holding the GOP hostage. “My guess is that the Tea Party groups have always been separate from the Tea Party movement.”
Johnson burst onto the national scene after given a number of fiery speeches at Tea Party rallies before he was even a candidate, and told a reporter that he “did kind of spring out of the Tea Party.”
At the Republican Leadership Conference however, Johnson downplayed his involvement with the movement, saying, “I gave a speech at a few Tea Parties. I never joined a group.”

Johnson is the most conservative elected official from Wisconsin in a generation……but go ahead, and believe the Daily Beast if you want to. Part of the coordinated media assualt on the TP/Estab divide in the GOP.

This language is pure nonsense. Because the Establishment wants the US Senate to be PURELY MODERATE, NO CONSERVATIVES NEED APPLY.
They were for “purity” when they undermined conservative candidates who won their party’s nominations. They were for “purity” when they encouraged Lisa Murkowski to make an independent run to retain her seat. They were for “purity” when they supported traitors like Jim Jeffords, Arlen Specter, Charlie Crist and Lincoln Chafee.
They don’t want their precious US Senate changed. They want it to remain “pure.” And men like Jim DeMint, Ted Cruz and Mike Lee are hated because they refuse to go along.
“Why can’t they be more like Kelly Ayotte and Ron Johnson” they probably seethe in the backrooms of the Senate! “we must do EVERYTHING we can to prevent more of them! Tell Cochran he has to run again so he can retire and we can appoint somebody later!”
He represents Wisconsin, for heaven's sake! The last time that state actually voted for a GOP presidential candidate was in the 1984 Reagan 49 state blowout.
The same winning strategy was used by the primary winner against Chelsea's MIL, Marjory Margolies (who was embraced by the Clintons).
HERE'S WHAT HE SAID---Brendan Boyle's commercials were running 24/7......where he looks into the camera and says, "I'm pro-choice" as words flashed that he "supports a woman's right to choose."
OTOH, HERE'S WHAT HE DID---Boyle supported legislation requiring doctors in abortion clinic to have hospital privileges, forcing the clinics to meet medical standards....which resulted in closing down many abortionists........those voting on the legislation knew full well that closedowns this would be the effect....... ============================================== Hafta admire the way Boyle handles the issue----legislation forcing the baby killers to close-up shop was pretty darn sharp. So, I don't care what he says----it's what happens when he acts that we'd best look at.
Also significant is that the wild-eyed NARAL did not want Boyle in office.....that tells you a lot, right there.
Any normal conservative can see actions show him as just another GOP-er...
Using the line "most conservative elected official from Wisconsin" is propaganda to hide his true colors. He's a sell-out GOP-er. Period!
I hate to break it to you….but our problem is not Johnson from wisconsin…it’s Chambliss from Georgia, Graham from Texas, McConnell from Kentucky, Cornyn from Texas, etc.
you can deny deny deny the reality of NH, Mass, Wisconsin all you want, but that’s your own ignroance party.
Too many freepers would rather huff and puff from the sidelines as you say, than understand reality. There’s not a single Senator from Wisconsin in our lifetimes who is anywhere close to Johnson.
Now, Cochran from Mississippi? Etc? that’s a diff story….
Stay on topic...
..and at least be intellectually honest and describe Johnson as a “moderate”, at best. He is NOT a conservative regardless of being from WI.
And yet, you can not name a single Wisconsin office holder as conservative as he is. And don’t say Scott Walker….they are about the same.
