Mapping 100 Years Of US Immigration By State
Zero Hedge ^ | 06/01/2014 | Tyler Durden

Posted on 06/01/2014 7:05:22 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

Several days ago, we looked at the big picture of US immigration, presenting the place of origin of America's 40 million foreign-born residents. However, as is always the case with the US, focusing on the big picture at the national level ignores the nuances at the state level.

The following two charts using Pew Research data, compiled by the WaPo, show the dramatic changes in the land of origin of US immigrants, beginning with 1910 when Germany was the primary driver of US-born residents, accounting for 18% of US immigrants, and proceeding through 2010, when Mexico has become the the biggest source of foreign-born residents: the birthplace of 29% of all immigrants in the US.

1910:

and 2010:

Some observations from WaPo:

With more than 40 million immigrants, the United States is the top destination in the world for those moving from one country to another. Mexico, which shares a nearly 2,000-mile border with the U.S., is the source of the largest wave of immigration in history from a single country to the United States.

But today’s volume of immigrants, in some ways, is a return to America’s past. A century ago, the U.S. experienced another large wave of immigrants. Although smaller at 18.2 million, they hailed largely from Europe. Many Americans can trace their roots to that wave of migrants from 1890-1919, when Germany dominated as the country sending the most immigrants to many of the U.S. states, although the United Kingdom, Canada and Italy were also strongly represented.

In 1910, Germany was the top country of birth among U.S. immigrants, accounting for 18% of all immigrants (or 2.5 million) in the United States. Germans made up the biggest immigrant group in 17 states and the District of Columbia, while Mexico accounted for the most immigrants in just three states (Arizona, New Mexico and Texas). Behind Germany, the second-most number of immigrants in the U.S. were from Russia and the countries that would become the USSR (11%, or 1.6 million).

Since 1965, when Congress passed legislation to open the nation’s borders, immigrants have largely hailed from Latin America and Asia. In states that have attracted many immigrants, the current share of immigrants is below peaks reached more than a century ago. Today there are four states (California, New York, New Jersey and Florida) in which about one-in-five or more people are foreign born. California peaked in 1860 at 39.7%, when China was the top country of birth among immigrants there. Meanwhile, New York and New Jersey peaked in 1910 at 30.1% (Russia and the USSR) and 26.2% (Italy), respectively.

Today, five times as many immigrants in the U.S. are from Mexico than China, the country with the second-highest number of immigrants (5% of all immigrants in the U.S., or 2.2 million). Mexico is the birthplace of 29% (or 11.7 million) of all immigrants in the United States. Immigrants born in Mexico account for more than half of all of the foreign born in four states: New Mexico (72.4%), Arizona (60.2%), Texas (59.7%) and Idaho (53.5%).

Of note: while until 1970, the percentage of US population that was foreign born steadily declined, reaching just 5%, over the past 40 years, as the organic growth rate of US-born population has declined below the rate of immigration, the percentage of immigrants as a % of total has been rising steadily and is now back to a level not seen in the past century.

Finally, here is why the Germans are losing to Mexicans, at least when it comes to US immigration by state: an animated map of German vs Mexican immigration from 1850 until modern days.

u.s. immigration from germany and mexico

One other point worth considering is that many of the illegals from Mexico and other countries are not the achievers from those countries, instead they are the scum of that country, thieves, murderers, etc. No, not all of them are crooked so save your lefty boo hoo’s - I didn’t say they were all scum, but many are.

In years past, immigrants wanted to achieve and to be a part of the American dream. Now, too many of the immigrants don’t want to be a part of the American dream, they dream of destroying the American dream as do the lefty’s who support them.

Most illegal aliens are Mexican and most Mexicans are illegal aliens.

“As of March 2010, 11.2 million unauthorized immigrants were living in the United States”

Why do we need so many illegals coming here from Mexico? Are the American youth really too lazy to do the work that needs done? The inner city hoodlums should be forced to get a job by cutting off their EBT and other freebies we pay for.

Let me coin a descriptor of our immigration policy, it is MEXICENTRIC!!! We are ignoring quality immigrants from nations around the world in favor of Mexicentric immigration.

No “comprehensive” immigration reform can occur while we continue such a Mexicentric immigration policy.

And with the way liberals seem to worship “diversity,” well, where is the diversity if almost all the immigrants are coming from the same place?

I believe illegals are classified either ‘M’ (Mexican) or ‘OTM’ (Other than Mexican) by immigration. The M’s are winning.

Very Mexicentric.

I've taken the figures from this table

found at cis.org and graphed them.

Two trends are obvious.

Agreed. I went to a specialist recently for circulation problems; when I spoke some Russian which I had learned during deployment, his hottie Moldovan nurse practically threw herself at me (I’m 65 & married).

As for German immigration before 1910, did they know something we didn’t about war approaching? Kaiser Bill must have been a bigger jerk than we thought.

“Why do we need so many illegals coming here from Mexico?”

We don’t. And the maps are proof that they are poised for taking over this country. I’ll admit it, I can’t help but not like them. I prefer being surrounded by my own kind, language I understand, culture that elevates. In these numbers I see them as usurpers. I feel bad only for one reason and that is because I know God doesn’t want me to harbor animosity towards a group of people, so I will keep trying to let it go....

A lot of the females look down on us white women and give us snooty looks as they smirk and speak to each other in Spanish...while they comb through all the American items in American antique and consignment shops and since they have so much more time on their hands than we do, snag the best items up for cheap so that there’s nothing good left by the time we get there.

German immigrants were coming here before the AMerican Revolution, and are the reason we don’t have an official language (the colonial leaders felt the Germans wouldn’t support the war for independence if it was to be an English-only country). When Hitler wanted “living space” for Germans, he was repeating a theme that was over 200 years old.

These people aren’t being imported to work; they are being imported to fill the void left by an absence of American children (note that NJ and PA are mostly getting Indians - who take white-collar jobs). These people are being imported to prop up housing, fill seats in classrooms, and CONSUME; we are a nation of 300 million trying to compete with two Asian countries of over a billion apiece.

You’re right! And the First Continental Congress nearly voted to make German our official language to spite the Brits.

Germany was not a nation then, but a still pretty messed up place after the Thirty Years War. Only the Kingdom of Prussia gave some sense of national unity.

Hmm...so the belief among Germans in `Lebensraum’ came to these shores as well. And the Pripet Marshes were so much closer.....

;^)
