Seattle to enact $15 minimum wage
Washington Post ^ | June 2, 2014 | Reid Wilson

The Seattle City Council voted unanimously Monday to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, equaling the highest minimum wage in the nation.

The law will phase in the higher wages over a three- to seven-year window, depending on the size of a company. Corporations that employ more than 500 workers will have to pay $15 an hour by 2017 if their employees don’t receive company-paid health care. Smaller businesses can wait until 2019 to reach the higher rate. All workers will receive the highest wage by 2021.

“The people who work for a living have basically seen no increase in their incomes since the 1970s,” Mayor Ed Murray said in an interview. “With the federal government fairly stuck, and as we see states more and more adopting that same dysfunction, cities are the place to lead right now.”

Murray spent his first four months in office hammering out an agreement to raise the wage through a task force that included labor, business and nonprofit representatives. Labor groups had threatened to put a wage hike on the ballot this year if the city didn’t increase the wage on its own.

The mandatory increase to this wage level will generate greater competition for the given work tier; thus, resulting in more productive workers, leaner operations, and fewer heads on the payroll.

This is good news. If Republicans were smart, they’d make the case to abolish the minimum-wage at the federal level. There’s no need for a federal minimum wage. If Seattle or any other leftist armpit wants to commit economic suicide, I say go for it. Seattle is ironically making the case that local and state government works best.

Phasing it in over seven years is a total cop-out. Either it’s a good idea or it’s not. Here’s all you need to know. They know it’s going to hurt the people they claim to want to help.

Well, it turns out the workers in SeaTac, WA are not happy with the $15.00 minimum wage.

See http://shiftwa.org/sea-tac-workers-not-happy-with-15-min-wage/ for the story.

And in my previous post, I should have been more specific: the $15.00/hr minimum wage was passed by the voters in SeaTac, WA.

SEATAC airport does not have to abide by the $15.00 minimum wage, by court order.

If you “Google” SEATAC minimum wage and read some of the articles that pop up, you’ll see just how much class warfare and class envy permeate the LIEberal minds in that area.

Strike Seattle off of my wish list of places to visit. F’em!

That statement pretty much applies to all large cities in Amerika today, especially cities in liberal, demoCRAP states. I don't want to do anything that supports in any way, shape or form, any liberal-ass cities or destinations.

I can see both sides of the issue although most of the posters here objecting to the raise are correct. This is a symptom of a bigger problem where we have shrinking jobs due to the inept policies from our leaders and as a result, we are having too many people chasing too few dollars along with prices going up. This is creating battles like this where is can be compared to a large colony of ants fighting over the dwindling supply of meat on an animal carcass.

Gosh, and to think just 30 some odd years ago price-fixing was deemed counter-competitive and greedy of businesses. And now today we have a crop of Marxist/socialist idiots demanding price-fixing upon labor/wages... how greedy and uncompetitive labor wants to be. Ever hear of antitrust laws? Minimum wage laws are a direct violation of the Sherman Anti-trust laws. Minimum wage fixes an uncompetitive wage upon labor where businesses cannot compete in a free-market supply/demand environment. Minimum wage laws are government mandated price-fixing upon labor, period... a price-fixing scheme meant to prevent lower wage competitors!
