Jay Carney, 2013: No Decisions About Bergdahl-Detainee Deal Without Consulting With Congress
The Weekly Standard ^ | JUNE 2, 2014 | JERYL BIER

Posted on 06/02/2014 7:48:57 PM PDT by Tzfat

Among the questions being raised about this weekend's exchange of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for five top Taliban commanders held at Guantanamo is why Congress was not informed of the move ahead of time. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said on Meet the Press on Sunday that concerns over the health and perhaps even the survival of Bergdahl required secrecy, telling reporters, "We couldn't afford any leaks anywhere" because the deal was "essentially an operation to save the life of Sgt. Bergdahl."

But just under a year ago, in June 2013, White House press secretary Jay Carney was unequivocal in his response to a reporter's questions about this very deal, saying, "[W]e would not make any decisions about transfer of any detainees without consulting with Congress and without doing so in accordance with U.S. law."

Here is the full exchange from the White House transcript...

"...As we have long said, however, we would not make any decisions about transfer of any detainees without consulting with Congress and without doing so in accordance with U.S. law..."

They obviously needed to divert attention from the VA scandal, among others. Never trust this administration.

Obama HAD to move RIGHT NOW, because he was so concerned about Bergdahl's health. After 5 years.

Did I mention the RIGHT NOW aspect?

Only a Fox News viewer would be suspicious of THAT.

In Carney-speak, RIGHT NOW= when we can get around to when it will help our idiot POTUS.

Plus, who DOESN'T love such a heart-warming story about an anti-American traitor POW and his kook family?

Not to mention exchanging severely dangerous enemies back to a war zone?

My heart is so warmed by this all-American story.

Why, it's almost like Saving Private Ryan.

They might have mentioned it to Hairy Reid and Pelosie in passing at one of their drunkin soirees. That is good enough for them.

Yeh the Taliban were going to kill a little PFC army guy just before suckering Oblather and Hagel into trading 5 High value Gitmo detainees. Highly doubtful.

It was claimed by the WH and Hael that Bergdahl was a prisoner of war, but officially he was never declared a POW. But then again, how could they be? The Taliban is not a nation-state. They are a club of some sort,..i.e. terrorists.

I seem to remember the WH considering GTMO residents criminals that needed to be tried in the U.S. But that failed.

If so, is it a practice of the U.S. to allow murderous criminals to be exchanged for someone with possible treasonous actions?

But most of the time when I see these actions by the WH, and then the subsequents rants of the right about how indignant they are...i am tempted to say to them...So what?

Why? Because nothing is ever done. Obama is breaking laws with impunity. All the elected Republicans want is to be relected. They express indignation in townhall meetings, regurgitate over and over about how bad Obama is, and do nothing about it. They feel if they repeat what people already know,..they get elected. But they people that elect them actually expect them to do something about it,..but the person doesn’t, over and over and over. Ted Cruz and Rand Paul are no different. Where are their impeaching action against Obama???

This should be a litmus test for anyone running for a Republican Congressional office.... “Do you think Obama has committed impeachable actions against this country?” If they answer yes...the follow up is “If you are elected, will you immediately file for an impeachable process against him?” If they equivocate and give an ambiguous answer, (...gotta wait on investigation...) then that is not the candidate to vote for.

Then I see additional rants on here,...in my head I say “So what? What are you doing about it? Are you supporting candidates that just want your money?” So the posters here give the same old stupid.. Obama did this, Obama has done that...” yada yada yada. White noise.

There. I’m done.

Carney isn’t the problem. Do-nothing Republicans are. Boehner being the worst.

Good rant, but the Obamanites refuse to call the Taliban “terrorists”. They won’t even call them “Islamacists.”
Obama and his state department lackeys refer to the Taliban as “extremists” (if that), the same label they use in e-mails to one another, the IRS, etc., when referencing Senator Cruz, Governor Palin and those of us here at Free Republic.
It’s an Orwellian goodthink thing.

Somebody please ask Carney Barker: “What does the administration think of the Taliban celebrating the prisoner swap as a “great victory”?

“concerns over the health and perhaps even the survival of Bergdahl required secrecy”

This sounds just like the excuse to release the Lockerbie bomber. They said, he is dying of cancer and only has a few months to live!

This turned out to be a lie.

Taliban are a religious sect that engages in authoritative, corrective actions, including murder.

To even attempt to negotiate with them is a waste of time.

Why would any person of deep religious conviction care about anything anyone else says about them?We

It appears we traded five hardened terrorists for a deserter, terrorist leaders that can regroup and plot the murder of more U.S. citizens, and done against the law of the land. That alone is an impeachable offense.

But will the republicans do anything? Oh, they will have committee hearings and what not to go into the fall elections and campaign funding cycles,..but nothing will come of it. Similarly to Ken Starr’s $40-60 million law fee to find out Clinton got a BJ.

Sorry to be cynical but until someone makes a stand, I’ll keep throwing away the GOP mailings in the trash. I should be mailing them back with a written message in black sharpe,,”So??”

“I must LOL at the idiots who listen to Jay Carney White House “press briefings” and think that there’s any shred of truth or integrity in them.”

Looks as though Carney has finally had it with being The Administration’s Designated Liar. Either that or his nose has gotten so long that he can no longer stick it where the sun doesn’t shine.
