President Obama said Tuesday he had an obligation to secure the release of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, regardless of the circumstances surrounding Sgt. Bergdahls capture by the Taliban five years ago and despite claims hes a deserter who walked away from his unit.
Speaking at a news conference in Warsaw alongside Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, Mr. Obama said he, like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and FDR before him, must take every possible step to bring home American fighting men and women held in captivity at the end of a war.
U.S. combat operations in Afghanistan will cease at the end of the year, though 9,800 troops will remain there through 2015.
As the end of combat operations drew closer, the president said the White House consulted with Congress for quite some time about a possible prisoner exchange to retrieve Sgt. Bergdahl.
The U.S. has always had a pretty sacred rule, and that is we dont leave our men or women in uniform behind. And that dates back to the earlier days of our Revolution, Mr. Obama said. We saw an opportunity. We were concerned about Sgt. Bergdahls health
We seized that opportunity.

He didn’t give a crap about the guys left behind in Benghazi and he has the nerve to compare himself to real Presidents.
Does Obama know he listed 3 Presidents who won their wars?
God Help me but I agree with Obama. But I doubt his reasons were really the same a mine.
America must NEVER allow another Country to hold an American as a prisoner/hostage for any reason. If we allow a President or our Government to pick and choose which Americans to retrieve, will they retrieve the ones we want or not? If this soldier is a deserter as seems likely then we now have him back in America and can deal with that in the manner it requires..
The Taliban said discussions were held three years ago for his release. He was never listed as a POW.
“Mr. Obama said. We saw an opportunity. We were concerned about Sgt. Bergdahls health We seized that opportunity.”
Yeah, right. He grabbed that turd by the “clean” end. What a deal!
Any self-respecting independent media would immediately ask ... what obligation did he have to the guys in Benghazi ...
Sounds like he was more eager to release 5 Taliban commanders than get this Bergdahl.
The war is not going to end, no matter what Obama says. Is the Taliban signing an agreement to cease hostilities? Is Al Qaeda? This is akin to FDR releasing POWs in the middle of the war, not in 1945.
How in the world can he say this ?? He sure didn't feel that way about Ambassador Stevens.....
"The Taliban offered to release him in exchange for $1 million and 21 Afghan prisoners."
How much money did the aged 1960s Marxist-Alinsky campus radical, psycho spoiled brats and their ideological issue (the Obama Administration) pay to the Taliban in addition to just five Gitmo guests?
We seized that opportunity to distract the American public from the VA scandal by creating this scandal.
Berg gets a POW Ribbon, or not?
now have him back in America and can deal with that in the manner it requires..
...and who, exactly, is ‘we’? The military is tasked with exacting justice on deserters and they are controlled by 0 and he wants him promoted.
And he seized the opportunity to further his agenda to destroy America.
Comparing himself to Washington, Lincoln and FDR...LMAO...this guy’s ego is over the top!!!
Hey Barry...you’re the WORST effin pres we ever had or ever WILL have!!! Do everyone a favor and resign.

It is hard on our men held in Southern prisons not to exchange them, Grant allowed, but it is humanity to those left in the ranks to fight our battles. Every man we hold, when released on parole or otherwise, becomes and active soldiers against us at once either directly or indirectly. If we commence a system of exchange which liberates all prisoners taken, we will have to fight on until the whole South is exterminated. If we hold those caught they amount to no more than dead men. At this particular time to release all rebel prisoners North would insure Shermans defeat and would compromise our safety here.
