Posted on 06/03/2014 5:15:34 AM PDT by lowbridge
Last January, SeaTac implemented a $15 per hour minimum wage for hospitality and transportation workers. The consequences to the drastic hike in wages are just beginning to be realizedand its not pretty.
A writer for NW Asian Weekly recently blogged about her experience attending an event at a SeaTac hotel. She asked employees if they were happy with the $15 wage. The ensuingconversations,
It sounds good, but its not good, the woman said.
Why? I asked.
I lost my 401k, health insurance, paid holiday, and vacation, she responded. No more free food, she added.
The hotel used to feed her. Now, she has to bring her own food. Also, no overtime, she said. She used to work extra hours and received overtime pay.
What else? I asked.
I have to pay for parking, she said.
I then asked the part-time waitress, who was part of the catering staff.
Yes, Ive got $15 an hour, but all my tips are now much less, she said. Before the new wage law was implemented, her hourly wage was $7. But her tips added to more than $15 an hour. Yes, she used to receive free food and parking. Now, she has to bring her own food and pay for parking.

gee .who coulda possibly seen that coming??????????
Something that made me smile this morning.
Dumb pukes, you got a hard lesson in economics.
Life can be a tough lesson - even tougher if your stupid ...
Econ 101 lady. Take one class then maybe you’ll know what happened. These people literally believe that the money should come from the “rich owners” and “rich corporate officers”. They have “plenty” and need to share. That’s the mentality.
Way to go SeaTac, you are well on the way to destroying yourself and Seattle is dumb enough to follow.
“Life is hard. It’s even harder when you’re stupid” - John Wayne
Reading this would be faster, cheaper, and more likely to make the lights come on:
Also available on audio:
“Everything happens for a reason. but sometimes, the reason is that you are stupid and make bad decisions.”
saw that on a post the other day. so true.
Mika ran the Morning Joe show this morning (Joe was off) and had on a few male guests(sheep) and put them all on the spot “Are you FOR or against the raising the minimum wage ? quick answer.???.”
All the sheep including Micheal Steele were too intimidated by her to say anything but ‘for’.
Then after that ritual she gleefully pointed out that Seattle just raised their city minimum wage to $15 per hour.
Steele pointed out that it was to be phased in over ~ 7 years and she jumped on him screaming “AT LEAST THE’RE DOING IT. ITS FAIR FOR BUSINESS TO PHASE IT IN”
Then she added that its a crime to pay workers less than that.
None of the men sheep on the show had the guts to tell her that she just contradicted herself.
Seattle will now become the next Detroit. The Seahawks are going to see a large drop-off in their season ticket sales in the coming years.
See, they should have raised it to $20 hr.
I don’t blame the workers - I blame the radical activists who couldn’t have cared less about the consequences of their actions. Now we have more people pushed onto the dole.
Anyway- It's minimum wage for minimum skills, minimum education, minimum effort, minimum reliability, minimum IQ, minimum ambition, minimum dedication, minimum perseverance, minimum diligence, minimum initiative, etc...
But wha about INCOME INEQUALITY?!?!
Mo money? Mo problems.
Another casualty of this stupidity will be the quality of service.
When the majority of the take home pay was dependent on tips, there was an effort to provide quality service in the hopes of a bigger tip.
Now there's no driving force for good service since they're (essentially) all paid the same whether they're actually any good at their job or not.
Didn’t even know this book existed. Thanks!
In reading this I get the feeling it is incomplete. If you are not happy with the situation there is generally a thought of what must be done to fix the situation. That is not here................................
A lot of people would rather make $5 an hour and have everything provided for them verses making $15 an hour and having the freedom and responsibility of providing for themselves.
Say it ain’t so! Do you mean you can’t legislate utopia? But Santa Claus is real, right?
Balls, it’s balls they don’t have, castration must be part of the MSNBC contract, if they ever had any balls to begin with.
There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch!
That book completely changed the way I understood economics. Mind changing.
The ‘Progressive’ war on excellence.
The ‘Progressive’ war on success.
I took econ in HS and college. Thought I understood it to the extent that I needed to.
Sowell can be a bit repetitive, but this book was great.
Where you can learn the “hows” by taking courses,
this book teaches the “whys”, and you can then easily derive the “hows” and the “what will happen ifs”.
Boo hoo, hoo. Bet she voted for 0 bummer as well. My give a flip meter is broken.
This story reminds me of when the Teamsters unionized my Dad’s warehouse in the 1960’s in Chicago. For a seventy-five cent per hour raise enough of the workers voted to join the union. My Dad stopped feeding the workers lunch yes there was a cafeteria but it became off limits to the union workers they had to bring there lunch and eat in the warehouse. He stopped furnishing uniforms but still expected them in clean pressed uniforms which they now had to buy and keep laundered on their own. And the best one of all they were no longer eligible for the profit sharing plan which cost most of the workers between $2,000 and $3,000 per year. When you added the union dues on top of all the lost benefits they were taking home far less than when they joined the union.
Oh and I was working alongside them my Dad cut a deal with the union that I didn’t have to join so I still got the increase in pay and didn’t have to pay the union dues.
Leftist mantra: It’s not the results, it’s the intentions. “But, we meant well.”
Just think of the millions of poor folk, generational welfare recipients and new immigrants who will now flock to the SeaTac area, knowing they can now find good-paying jobs with a living wage.
What? It won't work that way?
In the immortal words of Nelson Muntz, “Ha Ha!”
That is the exact mentality of the democrats in my family. All are financially screwed (living way beyond their means) and expected me and my husband to bail them out. At first, we loaned them money but, then they refused to pay us back, saying that since we had the money, we should just give it to them.
I haven’t had contact with any of them since then, going on 7 years. They always resented our hard earned successes and took every chance to make snide remarks about us. Sad for them, but my life is so much better without them.
It’s a good idea, raise their minimum, cancel all perks, and make sure they no longer qualify for food stamps, subsidies, or other govt handouts.
As God is my witness, I had no idea that my wife was a FReeper. That is you isn't it Honey? BTW, when did you move to Georgia?
That’s unexpected. Who would have guessed that ignoring the laws of economics would have consequences?
The hotel used to feed her. Now, she has to bring her own food.”
Wait what? You mean you might have to provide food for yourself if you make $15 an hour? Oh the horror!!!!!!!
Tipped employees get hurt the most.
I used to wait tables in college and I made way over $15/hour (and this was some time ago so in inflation adjusted dollars I probably made the equivalent of $30/hour on weekend much more than that). Plus I got a free meal, 2 free meals if I worked over 8 hours. Plus I got to take home leftover food from the kitchen (I had a deal with the cook) which fed my roommates. Free steak, ribs, baked potatoes, deserts. It was quite a deal.
I made more waiting tables than my first salaried job out of college!
“I lost my 401k, health insurance, paid holiday, and vacation, she responded. No more free food, she added.”
Maybe Kshama Sawant can pay the difference out of her own pocket. After all, she “cares” about the worker.
The Seahawks will still sell tickets because the people that can afford NFL tickets are far removed from this fight. What will crush people is the businesses downtown going out of business. Seattle has a fairly vibrant restaurant and retail sector downtown. I can see the retail going away first. And a lot of the restaurant business following close behind.
I think we have the same relatives.
This is a scene straight out of Atlas Shrugged. I mean, almost word for word!
One of the lessons in life: Avoid negative people or you get dragged down to their level.
I have an idea. Since theyre now not happy with 15 an hour, how about doubling it to 30 an hour? /s
Trying to give a damn...... Nope, not working.
Stupid is as stupid does.
There is a fundamental tenet of economics that few people, even the well educated, understand. It is that trade happens because of preferences. That’s it.
Most people take on the Marxist view of class warfare or the view that trade happens only in surplus, which in this case is the wage. Note that, given their preference the above named workers would forgo the increase in nominal pay. If you want to change America and the way we approach work, wealth, property and happiness, then teach people that all trade occurs solely due to personal preference.
Personal preference - nothing more and nothing less.
