Lots of Grand Canyons

by John D. Morris, Ph.D. *

On the seminar trail, I and other ICR speakers often use Grand Canyon as an example of Flood-caused geological features. We frequently run into opposition from people who’ve been taught that it took millions of years for the canyon to be carved out. We counter with studies that lead us to believe that each of the pancake-like layers was rapidly deposited by catastrophic hydraulic forces, and that the igneous and metamorphic deposits were caused by events quite unlike anything we see in modern times. The continent-wide coverage of the layers clearly speaks to an unimaginably devastating flood. The rates, scales, and intensity of the forces involved dwarf those of our experience.

The carving of Grand Canyon itself was likewise due to rapid, dynamic erosion that either occurred late during the Flood as the continents rose, or soon afterward when immense volumes of water rushed back into the ocean basins. Furthermore, the strata give evidence of having still been in a soft, not-yet-fully consolidated condition at the time they were gouged out.

Additionally, the sedimentary layers, the volcanism, and the erosion must have occurred recently—consistent with the timescale of Scripture. The evidence indicates that the strata were deposited rapidly by Flood waters, uplifted by monumental forces later in the Flood, and eroded by retreating Flood waters before they had time to harden—all within the one-year timescale given in Genesis. ICR speakers often remark that Grand Canyon is “Exhibit A” for the great Flood of Noah’s day, and photos taken during our many research trips and study tours into the canyon’s depths frequently grace our lectures.

But if the canyon’s cause was the runoff of waters from the Flood, and the deluge was worldwide, why don’t we find many such canyons around the globe? Impressive canyons sometimes form today through natural disasters such as excessive rainfall, a dam breaking, or a tsunami event, but Grand Canyon is far bigger than these. Obviously, in any set of examples, there must always be one that is the biggest, but a fuller answer may surprise you.

Grand Canyon is unique in that erosion has exposed its remarkable stack of layers on both sides of the river, and the strata are clearly visible, not covered by vegetation. Its accessibility and stunning grandeur have earned it a place among the world’s great geological wonders. The canyon’s dimensions are staggering: 277 miles long, up to 19 miles wide, and one mile deep, but it is not the biggest canyon on Earth....

As outrageous as it may seem to this worlds’ best minds, when the Holy Spirit confirms to a believer in Jesus Christ that something is true, it is true indeed. Best to believe it and go with it.

Which flood? Genesis 1:2 or Genesis 6?

Teacher (raising hand high and waving) teacher! I know that one: The answer is YES.

You want to write a story which is intended to save souls.
You are writing this story in the time of Moses and even Abraham, in its oral form.
Does it matter if scientific details are not perfect by today’s standards? NO it does not.
The intent of Genesis is to inform us that God is our Creator.
In a time before the microscope, before we knew what DNA was, or even understood basic cell structure.
That Adam came from “dust” is entirely understandable, as “dust” was the smallest particle that the people of that time could understand.
Besides, house dust today contains dust mite poop, which comes from dust mites after they eat human skin!
That we came from mud or “humus” is interesting as well. As “humus” contains the biological remains of plants and animals alike, perhaps even MONKEYS!

In short, I think that God has a very good sense of humor and he will laugh at all of us. Neither the Creationists nor the Darwinists have this right.

It is not a litmus test of faith at all to insist that one believe in the literal account of Genesis. How long was a “day” in Biblical times? Isn’t it amazing that the different species in Genesis appear at about the same sequence as what Evolutionists would claim?

Genesis was written for a primitive people in a primitive time and it is amazing how much Evolution and Genesis correspond to each other. That is, if you have an open mind and you keep your human ego at bay. We all want to feel smarter than everyone else, don’t we?

Again, God laughs at all of us.

Yes, many Evolutionists have turned out to be scientific frauds and some are radical atheists. So what?

Evolution and Creation are not mutually exclusive. Wisdom is found in the middle, in these debates.

There are any number of articles explaining the uplift 75 mya and subsequent rifting to the west if the Colorado plateau which were the major factors in the canyon’s formation. The plateau is part of the formation of the Rocky Mountains. The dating of the various strata and explanations of the unconformaties have been explained in hundreds of articles, dissertations, etc. Again, an understanding of structural geology put the lie to the young earth proofs. These young earth, flood geology folks are making money off sincere Christians.

The very fact that we are exploiting shale oil deposits demonstrates the age of the formations and the natural geological forces that create the basins. Just the name Permian Basin gives a hint as to the ancient nature of the underlying formations.

Sigh. Don’t you think God knows how old the earth is? The Bible is His Word. If it’s the words of men, I have no use for it. If He says He created everything in 6 days, and really meant 6 zillion years, and I have to go to post-enlightenment science to figure out what He meant, I have no use for Him. Since evolutionary science has proven to be idiotic nonsense, I can trust Him.

1) Two matters containing mass cannot occupy in the same space and time.
2) Matter cannot be created or destroyed.

Genesis says that the water was 22 feet above the highest mountain tops. And then the water receded.
Setting aside deus ex machina, where did all that rain water go?

Teacher (raising hand high and waving) teacher! I know that one: The answer is YES.

Perhaps you need to read the questions again? First question is 'which flood'? There are two floods described in the WORD, and both are described in more than one place. There were two different reasons for each of the floods. Perhaps IF the reason for the floods was investigated then the answer regarding the evidence of an ancient earth would not be such a stumbling block to the many.

Are you asking a sincere question? Do you believe there might be an explanation you haven’t thought of?

I’m not a geologist, but this article does elude to the answer, and the Bible fills in the rest. Water came from the sky which wasn’t on the earth, water came from underground, and the earth looked much different than it does now. You know Mt Everest is growing right? The earth may have been basically flat. When water covered it, part of the crust broke and pushed some part lower and others higher. The water went into the lower parts.

Again, God laughs at all of us.

Not at His children who just believe Him and what He has said. Just at those who believe Wisdom (the Truth) is found somewhere in the debatable grey area in the middle of Creationism and Evolutionism.

You see, too many Evolutionists are mis-defining what Creationism IS. Ken Ham is not the definer of Creationsim; he is a very visible proponent of countering the illogic of Evolutionism in the minds of young people.

I've heard your hybrid argument many times and many ways. Fact is, this hybrid argument brings young minds away from believing in Almighty God as Creator and toward accepting what the leftist (Godless) professors profess is true.

Genesis 2:5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew:

for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.

6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.

Genesis 7: 11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

Genesis 7:24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.... (5 months)

Genesis 8, which I am not going to type says ...God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;....

How long it took for that first flood of Genesis 1:2 to recede is explained by Peter in IIPeter 3 when Peter says verse 8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing,

that one day is with the LORD as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

Genesis 5: THE BOOK OF THE GENERATIONS OF ADAM.... verse 27 And all the days of Methuselah were 969 years: and he died.

Methuselah did not live in a flesh body a 'full day' with the LORD...

Genesis 6:3 And the LORD said, "My spirit (that would be the HOLY SPIRIT) shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his day shall be an hundred and twenty years".

So there was indeed a God driven and controlled 'climate change', and it had nothing to do with greenhouse gasses.

The point of my post was that it’s best just to believe God and His Word as a little child, rather than cause a young one to stumble into error over it.

I hope in Eternity to witness the manner of creation of the new heaven and new earth.
