When Thad Cochran won election to the Senate in 1978, he became (as his bio touts) the first Republican in a century to win election to statewide office in Mississippi. His tenure very well may end Tuesday night, and looking at how the composition of the state's vote has changed, that should not be a surprise.
Cochran's election came right as the state swung solidly but not as solidly as you might think into Republican territory. Looking at presidential election results over time, you can see when the Democratic majority faltered (at first in 1948, when the Dixiecrats won the state's electoral votes) and then when the Republican predominance kicked in in the late 1970s. (The blip in 1968 is when the state voted for the independent candidacy of George Wallace.)

sounds like time for an IRS audit of Trustmark Bank and whether they lowered their loan criteria for cochran’s (apparent) mistress
Are you high? Mis'sippi hasn't had a Dem Senator since James Eastland and John C. Stennis.
Has this guy said anything about rape that justifies your suspicion? (By the way, Akin was a mainstream candidate. Palin backed his opponent)
and reid (2010), mccaskill (2012) and donnelly (2012) were supposed to be toast, as well...

“OK, but if Cochran goes down, does that put MS in play for the dems?”

Ah....No!
“It all sounds good to send the old horse packing, but is the new guy susceptible to Richard Mourdock Disease?”
*******************************************************************
No...McDaniel has Mourdock by a MINIMUM of one standard deviation in basic intelligence and is way ahead of Mourdock in common sense.
“mcdaniel wins at least 55% in the general unless he pulls a mourdock/akin
Someone needs to clue him in on how to handle the subject of rape. IOW, STFU about it beyond “it’s an evil crime that should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

Before anyone falls prey to the FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) trying to be spread by some here, please remember that McDaniel has been endorsed and supported by the Senate Conservatives Fund (SCF). Having learned from the past, the SCF now VERY carefully vets their potential endorsees and then gives them significant training/advice on how to avoid the typical tripwires the Main Stream Media progressives attempt to lay out for them.
McDaniel is SOLID!

Yep... yet Mourdock received the same endorsement.
No one is pulling the FUD game here. After the debacle two years ago, folks are a bit more measured in their enthusiasm for untested candidates, that’s all.
“OK, but if Cochran goes down, does that put MS in play for the dems?”
No.
Of course, but if your efforts leave Reid in the Majority chair, do tell how desired legislation ever gets out of his inbox.
What makes you think the liberal republican Senate leadership will allow any conservative legislation to move forward?

bump
So you’re saying you’re not seeing one lick of difference between McConnell and Reid, right?

In my opinion the Republican will win regardless of whether McDaniel or Cochran wins the primary, but will have a better chance if McDaniel prevails.
“It all sounds good to send the old horse packing, but is the new guy susceptible to Richard Mourdock Disease?”
I think the new guy can speak pretty well for himself. The concern is whether Cochran would start slobbering out of the side of his mouth during the general election when asked what state he was elected from.
Good grief! This old crony’s cronyism runs very deep. Tangled web an all.
Mrs Webber likely feels entitled to all of the perks she’s received.
It could if the GOP-E does what it has done in the past, and abandon the nominee, and support the Dem.
They've done that... taken their ball and gone home...
