As controversy grows over the release of five hardened Taliban detainees in exchange for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the Obama administration is considering springing yet another prisoner from Guantanamo Bay.
Fouzi Khalid Abdullah al-Awda appeared via a video feed before a review board Wednesday morning in northern Virginia, often smiling as his private counsel Eric Lewis made the case for his release.
Al-Awda has been held prisoner for 12 years. According to Defense Department officials and his official Guantanamo detainee profile, he traveled from his home in Kuwait to Afghanistan just before the 9/11 attacks to train in terrorist camps, and "possibly" fight alongside the Taliban and Al Qaeda.
Al-Awda maintains he only went to Afghanistan for "humanitarian reasons to provide alms for the poor and to teach the Koran."
The deliberations follow the administration's controversial decision to free five Taliban leaders from Guantanamo in exchange for Bergdahl over the weekend. Lawmakers say the former prisoners are high-risk and were among the most sought-after detainees by Taliban leadership. There are now 149 detainees left at Guantanamo, which President Obama has struggled to close since taking office in 2009.

Who is stopping him?
This shit needs to STOP,PERIOD
who is America’s more dangerous enemies, the taliban or obozo and the current federal govt ?
WASHINGTON (AP) The family of a pregnant American woman who went missing in Afghanistan in late 2012 with her Canadian husband received two videos last year in which the couple asked the U.S. government to help free them from Taliban captors, The Associated Press has learned.
Republicans in Congress have criticized the Bergdahl agreement and complained about not being consulted, though Obama has defended it, citing a "sacred" obligation to not leave men and women in uniform behind. Rep. Duncan Hunter, of California, asked Obama in a letter this week why other Americans still in the custody of Afghan militants were not included in the negotiation. The families say their children, though without political or military ties to the government, are prisoners just as Bergdahl was and should be recognized as "innocent tourists" and not penalized further for venturing into dangerous territory.
"They really and truly believed that if people were loved and treated with respect that that would be given back to them in kind," said Linda Boyle, Boyle's mother. "So as odd it as it may seem to us that they were there, they truly believed with all their heart that if they treated people properly, they would be treated properly."
Relatives describe the couple, who wed in 2011 after meeting online, as well-intentioned but naive adventure seekers.
*****'naïve' is too sane a term for some folks.
Wasn't there small group of 'hikers' held in Iran under similar circumstances - two of three married & were ransomed recently? Could it be Obama will jump at this opportunity to again seek glory and empty GITMO afterall as a bonus?
I guess electing Republicans with principle really does matter because the lesser evils are standing there impotently. And complicitly.
I would have thought the last 5 would have been hired as WH advisors.
Who says they weren’t? State has a lot of missing cash.
“I guess electing Republicans with principle really does matter because the lesser evils are standing there impotently. And complicitly.”
Your post prompted me to ensure I send a check to Chris McDaniel today.
Lets hope that people remember this when more Americans die in the future. The blame will be placed squarely on Obama.
He’s freeing another one just to try and make it look like the whole purpose of the Bergdyl trade was to empty Gitmo. He thinks we’re all stupid.
Obamadullah is doing more for the Taliban terrorists than he did for our personnel in Benghazi.
Good. All we have to do is vote for principled people and we fix this. Why is it so hard for people to understand?
There are enough on the right to elect any principled person. Why oh why must we always find excuses to elect our problems?
I hope nobody is surprised by this.
When more Americans are taken hostage because the U.S. policy is that we now negotiate with terrorists, will Obamadullah get the blame or will the media cover that up too?
He released the most dangerous five. From now on out he can say these people aren’t really dangerous.
The thing is, what are we supposed to do with them? This “war on terrorism” will never be won because we won’t fight it to win. Then again, Obama has more or less already “deemed” it won.
He is the
Manuchurian Islamic Candidate.
Shouldn’t Bammy spend his summer waterfront vacation in Gitmo this year?
You know how the press has guests attend the SOTU speech. They sit in the mezzanine and he introduces them. These five will be there with their protege.
This is what he promised his anti-American base, and it’s what he believes.
He may have gotten a dose of reality when he took office, but now he is beholden to no one.
No way is he going to be held accountable for anything. The “opposition party” is just too scared of his skin color.
